Compression test figures. Can these be right?

Recommended Posts

I've been suspecting that the rings may have worn as the car has felt underpowered lately and my catch can is filling pretty quickly, about once a month, (250miles). So I done a compression test across a all 4 cylinders and got these results.

Engine details:- Been out for a 20minute drive. 110,000 miles running around 200-210bhp at 1.1bar or 0.7bar. Currently set at 0.7bar.

Each plug when removed had some oil on them too. Indicating ring failure across all 4 cylinders.

1. 30psi 60psi with wet test

2. 30psi 60psi

3. 30psi 60psi

4. 30psi 60psi

Can they really be that low or did I do something wrong? Could the gauge be faulty?

I've currently been saving to get the engine forged (stage 2) anyway but was going to have it done once summer is over. Can I still drive it as is now until the end of summer or is it a case of take it off the road if the figures are correct?

They seem to be really know. How does the engine start up? If your oil catch can is filling up its signs of rings. But i aint no expert someone here with more knowledge should be able to help

Yeah that was my logic too. That's the thing it idles about 800 once warm and holds it petty well. I personally thought it would idle horribly and throw out quite a lot of smoke too!!

Just the usual amount of white smoke from a cold engine that clears up a bit once warmed up. I would have thought it would be throwing out a darker smoke In a higher volume!

That was with throttle fully open.

Thank for the info guys. Any more suggestion?

seems odd that you had 30 across all four, I would try a different tester before anything else bud..

This is was what I was thinking as the figures were so low. I'm going to see if I can borrow Gainzy's car and run the tester on his. If it shows similar readings I'll see if I can borrow another from someone else.

It's going forged anyway at some point just trying to determine if it's got to be done sooner rather than later.
