Ollieh17
In 4th and 5th Gear around 2,000rpm i can hear a slight humming noise and can feel the vibrations slightly through the drivers side floor and pedals. As i speed up the sound gets louder and then goes away. First and second are silent and third is quieter but still noticeable. I have recently changed driveshaft however the noise was apparent before. There is fresh oil in the gearbox, 75w
morgey
Had the wheels balanced recently?Or possibly wheel bearing or rear engine mount is on its way out? Edited March 17, 2014 by morgey
Ollieh17
could be the wheels, they are temps borrowed from my mates mx5 not sure if they have been balanced. There is also a slight scrapping noise in any gear so i suspect it probably is the wheel bearings
Ollieh17
best way to check if its the wheel bearings?
JamesD89
best way to check if its the wheel bearings? Shake the wheel to see if there is any play when the car is jacked up Edited March 18, 2014 by JamesD89
Ollieh17
hmm thats what i thought, and did and didn't seem to be any play.
JamesD89
It may not be a lot of movement try spinning the wheel and listen for any unusual noise both my fronts needed doing when i got the car and i will be renewing rears just as a matter of course. As said above though i would always have it tracked and balanced a few miles after fitting new wheels. James
Ollieh17
It sounds more like brakes rubbing slightly than any bearing play.I'll get the new wheels balanced and all tracked as fitted coilovers on the weekend when i get them sprayed. But gonna have to pay out for tracking before that just for the MOT
Jay85
With the car jacked up spin the wheel and put your hand on the suspension spring, if you feel a roughness/slight vibration your bearings could have gone dry!
Ollieh17
it only seems to 'vibrate' in 3rd and above. Say i was doing 20 in 3rd it would vibrate change to second and it wouldnt be obvious
Glanza-Ben
could be warped disks or seized calipers?
Tercel-R
Check that the dust shield isn't bent and touching the disk. Doesn't take much contact to make a racket
Ollieh17
Front disks are only a month or so old! Reckon one caliper could be sticking. I have a n/a one in the garage is it a straight swap?

Ollieh17
Got MOT on the weekend, cars starting to piss me off again
Ollieh17
mot said front wheel bearings are fine, but play in the rears. Vibration definitely feels like its from the front, leaning towards wheels
