threehundred Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Broke down yesterday afternoon at 3pm, still sat with the car at 11pm last night when they decided to 'cancel' my recovery and tell me to try again tomorrow. Its getting fuel and a spark but won't start.I need to get it trailered to a garage but not sure where (its in Basildon) I rang ATSpeed in Rayleigh but they haven't got the diagnostics needed. Any suggestions for other specialist places in Essex? Thanks. If I've posted this in the wrong place then could a mod please move it, thanks. Quote
Gainzy Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Any good mechanic should have a diagnostics reader surely taking it to a toyota garage would do the trick it might be an easy fix! What do you think the problem is? Long afternoon that lad! Hope you get sorted Quote
H_D Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 check your dizzy cap for cracks - if it has any cracks on it the car will not start. Quote
aaddzz123 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 I've always thought an engine will start if it has fuel and spark. Did you check it was getting spark at the plugs and not further up the line? What happened before it wouldn't start? Was you driving? Did it slowly cut out or was it sudden? Have you tried doing the diagnostics? I presume this is a starlet we're talking about lol? Quote
H_D Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 If there is a crack in the dizzy cap the spark will be weak Quote
aaddzz123 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 It should still start if there is a spark at the plugs though and there's fuel in there. Even if it's just a cough splutter and run for 3 seconds. Only other stuff I can think is if a major sensor has packed up and that should pop up on diagnostics. Quote
aaddzz123 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Also just to mention of its a starlet it runs on an older obd set up which to read the diagnostics you just have to bridge two pins in the diagnostics port (if you didn't already know). Quote
daniel_g Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 The timing also needs to be right for it to start. Do you have all the cam covers on ? The belt could have slipped.Could be a mapping issue ? Cold start etc. Quote
bucketep91 Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Where have you checked for a spark? Plug leads or king lead?Id take the dizzy cap off and check the rotor arm. If its ok you could try cleaning the points up inside the cap. Quote
