It depends on how hard core you want to go, but replacing the insulation with new wide PVC tape is a good start. All the custom looms I make these days I use braided covering rather than split conduit. Takes longer to do but the result is tidy.

The ends of the wires have terminals on them and these can be removed from the plug. Easiest way is to use a pick and lift the keeper tab up and you should be able to pull the pin out.
