morgey
Theres a few ways you can do it, just depends on your budget and overall goals for the car, if you're going stripped and track focused then drivablility isnt really key so you can have a mad engine in there. For me I would always prefer my car to be used as a daily and not get on my nerves at any stage so would opt for a much milder engine just because it means its easier to manage on a daily basis. Not that you couldnt daily a hicomp forged 20v lol
Dansstarlet1996
yea, think il run a mild set up, more strengthen the engine up for future than anything else, this weekend is going to be repairs mainly, exhaust broke on a weld on the centre box, so going to have to reweld that tomorrow after work, and the NSR top mount has given up so knocks like hell over big bumps, so going to try to sort the exhaust first then see how quick i can get a top mount, or whether il wait until i chuck on coilovers
Dansstarlet1996
did some repairs over the last few days, found a knocking noise that turned out to be the exhaust snapping in the centre box, i think from the previous owner smashing it into speed bumps, they had managed to snap the casing around the centre silencer rather than breaking the weld, the case was broken. also found that my gauges started to interfere with my brake lights, popped both side ones so replaced them and re did the wiring. then attempted to find a Temporary repair to slow the oil burning until i take it off the road and rebuild her, used some Redex stuff called stop smoke, was like pouring treacle into the engine but to be fair to it, has basically removed the smoking all together!! but im aware it wont last forever, just need it to work for a few more weeks until its off the road. going to replace the NSR shock as well in the next day or two as it bangs like hell over bumps and jacked it up and found the shocks pissed all its oil out, going to do the top mount to while im at it, so nothing exciting, just maintenance. ohh and my cambelt parts from japan finally arrived after 8-9 weeks so be re doing that when the lump gets pulled
Dansstarlet1996
only a small update, took the car out this morning for a little run, was finding the power delivery and handling to be deteriorating as i was driving, so when i got back jacked the car up for a quick look, turns out both front shocks blew the oil seal and pissed all theyre oil out, so its basically bouncing on the spring, no shock absorbing at all! both rears where starting to leak and the top mount of the nsr has nearly fully collapsed, so rather than put new shocks on i decided to order some coilovers, as it was going to be getting some anyway so seems like a waste of money to re do all the shocks only to replace them in a few weeks anyway. so they should be here in a few days, aim to get them on for friday so it might be ready for simply jap if i can afford it

Dansstarlet1996
so as some of you know the car never made it to Simply Jap coilovers never turned up on time (still not here!) so couldnt get the suspension sorted out in time to go, did get my rear wheel bearings done yesterday though on the upside, glad i didnt try to risk driving up as the NSR bearing sounded horrible, took it ll appart and found rather large lumps of metal and shavings inside the bearing case and the grease, and it was going blue, il get a picture up later on, but it wasnt in a good way! so for the minute waiting for my coilovers to arrive so i can fit them, then its just a case of ordering the last few bits for the engine and some other supporting bits like cage and levin brakes

morgey
Did you just recently replace them? They only need nipping up by hand then max of 1/4 turn on a ratchet. Id hazard a guess they were done up too tight
Dansstarlet1996
they were noisy when i bought it so replaced them sunday, yea looked up all the torque settings, 30nm for the hubnut then cap and lock pin so made sure it was all done properly. did think its probably been to tight, did have to put a bar on it to undo them so reckon that was a large part of the excessive wear
Dansstarlet1996
coilovers finally arrived this morning! so got them straight on! ended up getting Yellow Speed Racing ones, as they were with the price i wanted and at the time was the fastest delivery... until it took 3 weeks but never mind. got them all fitted, fairly level, little higher at the front to allow for it to settle down. going to get her tracked at the end of the week to allow some settle time. from what I've driven so far, pretty impressed by Yellow speed, not much more bumpy than springs and feels a lot more stable, il get some pictures up soon
Dansstarlet1996
ignore the terrible quality, took the pictures on my potato of a windows phone il get some of them on the car in the next few days Edited August 9, 2017 by Dansstarlet1996

Dansstarlet1996
went out this evening to get some miles on the coilovers and have a nice drive, cant believe the difference in coilovers vs springs, night and day difference! was able to hold it in corners that before i'd be backing right off in before! but anyway got shit loads of pictures so enjoy the potato phone quality picture spam
morgey
Looking good, coilovers really are a great investment imo
Dansstarlet1996
yea man! couldnt believe the difference, my old shocks were knackered to be fair but still!
Dansstarlet1996
so after going out for a drive the other night now the coilovers have settled a little bit I've decided i need a cage as the next big spend, after having a 'scare' while playing with an MR2 and MX5. pleased i have the coilovers and the bracing in the back, because im pretty sure id either not be here or the car would have been destroyed. so big thumbs up to Yellow Speed and Zisco! Dansstarlet1996
I've heard... hence why im looking at a cage safety first and all that, was very much a seat of the pants moment
Ollieh17
Assuming a bit of lift off oversteer. Coilovers and cage probably made it worse!

Dansstarlet1996
think keeping my foot in it was all that kept it on the road! as Flynn will be able to back up the islands roads are far from any good, and driving like a dick in the dark on tight b roads was kind of a stupid choice, oops. Pikey009
Love the car mate nice plans and great progress. Get an NA rear bumper on and TTE back box and you're there with the look I know they're hard to come by but get a Yaris TTE tail pipe and have it welded to a custom back box and there you go. Flynn
It's got a lovely full HKS silent power system on it. Sounds mint......I'd stick with that. And yeah, our roads are getting smoother but they have mad camber and bounce plus one second you can fit 3 cars side by side then it will narrow to 1 car width into a blind bend. Keeps you on your toes that's for sure
