William737 Posted October 20, 2018 Posted October 20, 2018 Hello all, My 4efte engine In my Glanza started to make a tapping sound the other day, it has progressively for worse. Coolant and oil are fine, no loss in performance. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers Will VID_20181020_122033380.mp4 Quote
Calum122 Posted October 20, 2018 Posted October 20, 2018 Compression test? I personally wouldn't be driving it, or starting it. Quote
K24_glanza Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 Idle solenoid can cause tapping noise. You could take it out and give it a clean. there is a tutorial on here or TGTT.com somewhere. Quote

But this sounds worse, I would do a compression test Quote
William737 Posted October 21, 2018 Author Posted October 21, 2018 The coolant sprayed all over the engine bay. There is coolant in the overflow bottle but none in the radiator. Quote
William737 Posted October 21, 2018 Author Posted October 21, 2018 Changed the idle valve earlier and hasn't changed the sound. Quote
jellybaby Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 sounds cam clearances or poss piston slap but I wouldn’t drive it if I was u Quote
Ep71T Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Valvetrain noise is 2 x engine revolution in frequency. Hope this helps Quote
William737 Posted November 26, 2018 Author Posted November 26, 2018 Bit of an update, I have completed a compression test and it's all good. All pulleys are tourqued up. Quote
William737 Posted November 26, 2018 Author Posted November 26, 2018 I took the rocker cover off a few weeks ago to look at the cams but I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking for or measuring Quote
Calum122 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Gap between the shims and the bottom of the cam lobe when fully closed. Should be within tolerance. Quote
William737 Posted November 27, 2018 Author Posted November 27, 2018 (edited) Update, ive checked the cam clearences and one of the cams tolerance is way to tight. could this be the issue? Edited November 27, 2018 by William737 Quote
William737 Posted November 28, 2018 Author Posted November 28, 2018 So next thing to take off the Cams? Would it be likely to be a shim replacement? Quote
jellybaby Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 Follow this link tells u exactly what to do and to work out what shim size u need http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/community/index.php?threads/4efte-engine-timing-and-tork.99425/ Quote
William737 Posted November 28, 2018 Author Posted November 28, 2018 Thanks for that, just wondering why the gap would get closer between the cam and the shim? Quote
jellybaby Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 Could b the shim is not located correctly incorrect fitment of cams. Many things Quote
Padders Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 It gets closer the more the valve and valve seat wears. Did you check the clearance when the engine was cold? Quote

You don't need to remove the cams to change the shim. Pressure down on the edge of the bucket and remove the shim Quote
William737 Posted November 29, 2018 Author Posted November 29, 2018 Okay thank you, I'm planning on taking a good luck next weekend, I've got another engine spare so it may come in handy. Quote
William737 Posted November 29, 2018 Author Posted November 29, 2018 Yep checked clearance when it was cold. Quote
