Claymore
Doesn't look like a 4efte to me. The pistons look to be dome topped and the block doesn't have the drillings or studs for the oil filter relocator. Although it does seem to have the knock sensor in the back. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/toyota-starlet-gt-turbo-ep82-bottom-end-engine-80-000/324264882395?hash=item4b7fb170db%3Ag%3AM5sAAOSwHfpfKGbB&LH_ItemCondition=4 Possibly swapped out by previous owner for a damaged one and this guy doesn't realise. Best avoided I think.
Trevstar
Deffo 4efe pistons, too high comp for boost
Sam44
Yep 4efe.

Calum122
I was having a conversation about this a while back. It's not a deal breaker. I don't think the 4EFE block is any weaker. But you don't want to be paying FTE prices!

Pistons are not good for higher boost levels. You never know, maybe it had some Mk1 GT thick rods to make up for it!
Claymore
Continuing the theme of Weird ass 4efte / not a 4efte bitsa engines!? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374042202483?epid=652485202&hash=item5716a71173:g:JjEAAOSw2ypiZ6DI Doesn't look too bad until you get to the PAS bracket "mod" to keep A/C and delete the pas pump, 4efe dizzy, coil, 2 plug 4efe ECU (other 2 ECU loom plugs appear to have been cut off and replaced with piggy back plug connections), forward facing thermostat cap from an auto?! Think I'll pass on that

Nice one, Found this in the EPC : Can't find the parts page for the idler setup though, do you have a link? Looks like a 'mare to adjust, do you just pull to tension or is it sprung loaded or eccentric bolt?

Sadly the parts are discontinued as strangely I'd like to run this setup to keep AC but go electric power steering to get the air filter behind the drivers headlight. I did find that diagram in the EP91 4efte EPC https://toyota.epc-data.com/starlet/ep91/61052/electric/8719/88444/ but when you click on it the site said it was not compatible with the vehicle. Checked the EP82 and it is listed but as you say NLA from the dealer. However, when you look at the engine for sale in the eBay ad it doesn't look like the bracket above. It looks to me like an EP82 PAS lower adjuster bracket with an idler pulley bolted through. Not a vertical sliding pulley bracket with separate tensioner bolt. I can't seem to find this setup in the Toyota EPC. Doesn't really matter I guess. Edited May 5, 2022 by Claymore

I'd love to find the factory one but it must have been such a rare setup.
