Kaaaty Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 hello guys im new to owning the starlet just a question.if i havent driven the car all day or night when i first start her up she revs quite high until warmed up. whats this about??cheers in advance.Katy Quote
ste91 Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 How high? Mine would always idle high when it was cold and then drop to as low as 700 when warm. Quote
ToyotaTech15 Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 That's perfectly normal,The engine has a cold start system for cold mornings and when the engine is at cold temperature.Once the engine warms up sensors like coolant temp etc will tell the ecu it's up to temp and the revs will settle. There's nothing to worry aboutGary Quote

LukeSR Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 When i start the car up first thing when it hasn't been running for ages it will always rev high (2000 rpm) until the engine is warm.Keep the revs down until the temp needle is at least half way up Quote

Mine starts off at around 1000rpm Quote
LukeSR Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Woah that's quite a high cold idle you got there! Mine starts off at around 1000rpmWell i would say 2000 is the max, it probably sits about 1500 Quote
Glanza_cl Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Thankss for the replyy..thats made me feel alot better lol.another thing that i noticed is that it smoked when i pulled off the drive this mornin.ive not noticed it before?what colour is the smoke? if it's white it will just be condensation which is normalif the smoke is blue , it's burning oil which could mean valve stem seals are on the way out. Quote
RobSR Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 ^ or rings..!The SR used to start at about 1800 and then settle down..Also regarding the "don't rev it till the temp needle is halfway" that's for water temp, which gets up to temp alot quicker than oil.. Quote
Kaaaty Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 my lupo burnt oil i'd recognise the smell. Its done around 300 miles this week and the oil level is the same. Quote
Starlet__SR Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 It's called a cold running map Katy, it puts extra fuel in to help warm the engine up quicker, it's an automatic choke, as for the smoke, it's just condensation, it's nothing unusual, I thought the same too, it's just a thing with toyota's.Damien Quote
Guest Enzo Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 it's just a thing with toyota's.and most other cars Quote
Starlet__SR Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 and most other carsI've found it more noticable on toyotas:) Quote

More fuel normally makes things run cooler...It adds more fuel in, but I ain't convinced that helps it warm up quicker? Anyone care to confirm or deny Quote
Big_T-SR Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Yer, as the others have said, its perfectly normal. Apparently toyotas' revs are higher on choke than any other manufacturer.. can anyone confirm? Sorry for being slightly off topic Quote
Starlet__SR Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 you sure? More fuel normally makes things run cooler...It adds more fuel in, but I ain't convinced that helps it warm up quicker? Anyone care to confirm or deny It's just designed to run the engine at a higher rpm, to warm the engine up quicker before use:P Damien Quote
Steve GT Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 ^^^ thats new to me loli thought More fuel normally makes things run cooler as well lolnot saying your wrong just never heared that one before Quote
Sparky Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 It doesnt make it warm up quicker.During the warm up phase more fuel is needed due to condensation in the bores meaning fuel cant be burnt as easily. Theres also a load of other things but I cant be assed to get my uni notes out lol But yea Katy its normal and nothing to worry about Quote
Steve GT Posted September 19, 2009 Posted September 19, 2009 thanks for clearing that up lewwas going to say i dint think it makes it warm up quickeroh and Luke 2000rpm? even 1500 rpm is really high 1st thingit shouldnt really go over 1100rpm cold then droppes to just below 1000 when warm lol you need to turn your idling down dude lol Quote
