Chrishoughton1989
Water keeps being pushed into expansion tank but doesn't seem to be drawn back ? Any help ?
TurboTobz
Check your coolant hosing see if it feels as if they are pressurising when the engines up to temp it could be signs of headgasket Edited July 9, 2013 by TurboTobz
StuDoc 72
Sniff test
Chrishoughton1989
Head gasket only just been done? Also doesn't overheat. Edited July 9, 2013 by Chrishoughton1989
akyakapotter
You say filling up dose it over fill it. ? If not I wouldn't worry mine pushes some into the expansion under hard driving. takes its time pulling it back into the system. I've had new gasket and and all that jaz just keep an eye on it bud
Chrishoughton1989
Fills basically to the top and then open rad cap when it's cold and no sign of any water because all in expansion tank. Start it up with cap back on and it doesn't draw any back even after a day or so. ?
akyakapotter
Hmm something not right there maybe the rad cap is broken get a sniff test done bud (4000th post )
Chrishoughton1989
Would a rad cap cause this ? I will try get a sniff test done also. But surly it would overheat.
StuDoc 72
Yes if the cap isnt pressurising the system it will all just boil into the exp tank. Do the sniff test though sound like the HG is fukered. The fact its not over heating is strange but could just mean its not creating an airlock.
Rob H@RCH Engineering
I would say try a new rad cap too thats more than likely the problem and for what they cost its worth changing it anyway!
Dan Barnes
mine does this also, and my bottom rad hose isnt getting warm, sits at normal temp tho.. had a new thermostat not long ago
StuDoc 72
Thermostat could be faulty. Also id stick a jet up the heater matrix pipes to make sure its not all choked up.
Dan Barnes
was working fine until recently. and how can i do that mate, bit of a noob lol
StuDoc 72
1st thing is 1st I would do the sniff test. If your coolant is smelly of petrol then the HG is gone. Next I would try a rad cap. Then I would flush out the heater matrix. To do this you drain the system remove the 2 water pipes that go through the bulkhead and put a hose in 1 of them and blast water through it then do the same with the other till all the gunk comes out. Finally Id replace the thermostat. Id do it in this order because its the least expensive 1st.
Dan Barnes
thanks alot stu do I need to buy a rad cap for a civic radiator as thats what im running? or will a starlet one fit it?
akyakapotter
Starlet one won't fit bud
Chrishoughton1989
Yh mine has civic rad but all pipes warm. With a 1.3 cap ? Can you not test the caps ?
Dan Barnes
Starlet one won't fit bud Cheers bud, I might buy a hole new radiator as i have a slight leak coming from this one I think as coolant keeps spraying everywhere on a long journey, noticed it on my intercooler piping
Chrishoughton1989
Water doesn't smell of fuel so hopefully rad cap.
Chrishoughton1989
Replaced rad cap. Stil the same. Done compression test all good and equal. Hoping its a dodgy jubilee clip somewhere :/
Ep'd
Definately thermostat had the exact same issue!
Chrishoughton1989
Have tested thermostat :/
JayJ
Sounds like there could be air lock somewhere or water way blocked. Drain your system and exp. tank again, top up the rad and start the car without rad cap so the air can escape. Did you check, that the small hole on thermostat is pointing up?
Chrishoughton1989
No would the hole not facing up cause this ?
JayJ
Atleast it will help the air get out easier, might be the problem.
