The Toffinator
The apollo is a load of shite, The carrera isnt bad at all for £250 but they have skimped on a few things to get the price down What will you be using it for dude? Proper attempt at mountain biking?Road use also hammers bikes if they arent looked after, so a cheap one isnt worth it as it will end up needing most of the bike replacing at one point! My choice if i was personally spending about £300 would be this all day long http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Giant-Revel-4-Mountain-Bike-2013-Hardtail-MTB_56301.htm They also do one with discs for £350. Not a major upgrade though Edited August 7, 2013 by The Toffinator

Flynn
I picked up a Marin that had been set up for hill climbing, weighs nothing and came with £1400 in receipts, was only 3 years old (and immaculate) off eBay for £450.....I might have just got lucky but it seems like there are bargains to be found on second hand bikes
Azz
EBay is your best bet but for 300 you won't going to get a good bike imo, me and my friends do a lot of downhill tracks around the mountains in north Wales but it is a bit more extreme than just after a starters bike...I would a little more and maybe go for around the 5-600 mark.I've just bought a new santacruz 12 2013 edition which has set me back just under 3k and its not even a finished bike lol Edited August 7, 2013 by Azz
The Toffinator
If I was going new I would still spend more than £150 if you are planning on using it properly.£150 would get you a bag of shite...I have worked Saturdays at bikeshop for the last 5 years and its my hobby. £300 New is what I would recommend minimum, if second hand £200 should get you something goodWord of advice though a lot of 2nd hand bikes are knackered hence being sold, yet look perfectly fine.Be careful with older bikes that look flash also as parts are harder to find! TurboTobz
Build one up from a frame peice by peice I did it had the wheels built to my spec, never rode the fucker and sold it for £500 lol
kavan-k
1. Halfords is a pile of wank for bikes unless you want to be buying a kona off them, which are always overpriced like all their bikes. 2. In my experiance in dh, wood trails etc.. 200 wont get you a decent bike im afraid, even 300 nowadays isnt really a good budget :/ as said above, get on ebay, or gumtree is a good bet! some cracking deals on some that have been built. Its a costly thing to get into, when i was into it i built my bike for 8 or 900, and it wasnt even a minter lol.
chrisp96
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/hardrock-disc-26-2013-mountain-bike-ec042241?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=froogle&utm_content=mkwid__pcrid_19178765816_kword__match__plid_ i recommend this bike for the money specialized hardrock i have the 2010 one and use it for cross country riding and commuting also used it on some mini dh tracks and on jumps etc very good bike for the money the forks are not the best tho but its cheap i also ride and race downhill ive got an iron horse sunday and can tell you mountain biking is very expensive ive spent hundreds of pounds on my dh bike
Addymk2
Go second hand mate, or up your budget. Consider it as an investment if your gonna be out and about on it a lot. A second hand bike for 3-500 will probably sell for the same amount a year later Aslong as you buy wisely.
Addymk2
That's mine, £300 off eBay.That's what I built the misses for about £500(On a side note, I'm a qualified instructor and used to race downhill for work ;) lol ) Edited August 7, 2013 by Addymk2

Malcolm GT
I literally have no idea what to buy on eBay though or what to look out for! Useless! Think might just up my budget to 300 and see what's around
daniel_g
Yous are all nuts haha, i got a 'mountain bike' from a local, ehh, junkie tbh, for the vast some of 20 quid. I pedal it and the wheels turn and thats all it needs to do lol.

kavan-k
I hope your talking about a garden bush mate! If not, the trimmer would have to be £5 with all the excess pubes.
