Calum122
Hhhmm, does that title seem familiar? Oh ryt I posted a similar thread a couple of weeks back about me snapping a camshaft journal bolt. Well I took it to an engine specialist and that's all sorted. It cost me another £100 for gasket, bolts and the work. I was reassembling the rest of the car and I like to just renew everything. With my fresh pot of Stainless Steel nuts and bolts. So I splashed out, £25 for 10 proper exhaust nuts. I thought I was the DB's. Apart from the exhaust nuts were absolutely solid to turn without even touching the manifold. That's okay I thought, that's just how exhaust nuts should be, to stop them rattling loose. until eventually SNAP! The stud has snapped off flush with the manifold. Great, is this another £120 I need to spend on gaskets, head bolts and what not to have this fixed? So gutted. Bottom left exhaust stud. As said previously, the car has been off the road ever since I've had it and I've had enough now. I need this car to fix my bike so FCK it. It can blow for all I care, I suffer the performance lost for a few months until I can be ARSED to take it all off again to fix. I would like to think this could be fixed in Situe. I'm not dismantling it all again it's doing my nut right in. I might just drive it to a garage. How much of an issue is this going to cause me. So the top three are tight, and the bottom right. But no bottom left. Brand new exhaust gasket.
morgey
Cant you take the manifold off and either get 2 nuts on the remains or weld a nut to it or even get some mole grips on it and just unscrew it?A grage should be able to do it in place tbf.
Calum122
Yeah my thoughts exactly. I reckon they could. I probably could, I just wouldn't mind actually driving this car whilst in my ownership. I know what will happen. I've spent the last 6 months just sorting it out. Then I'll finally finish it off, and it'll either get nicked, crashed into or I have to sell it. It was rough when I got it and I took it on as a bit of a project but it was just mis-represented. It was suppose to be a good runner just a little tatty around the edges. And to be fair that was the first mistake I made. Next time, the car has to look mint, but mechanically it can be broken. But anyway, I haven't fired her up yet, king lead snapped in my fingers, just deteriated. So I have to get another one of those. Still isn't holding water in the thermostat housing either! THAT WAS THE WHOLE REASON WHY I STRIPPED IT DOWN! So that's annoying me. Edited April 10, 2015 by Calum122
Ollieh17
I got a spare stat housing here mate. As for the stud could drill it with a left hand drill bit and hope it catches and brings the stud out? Otherwise may take some time, but drill the whole stud out tap the hole and use a thread insert
Calum122
Aye, I'll bare that in mind Ol. I've rinsed enough money on this slag this month. Still plenty left, I just don't want to spend anymore on it for now. But I'm sure a PM will come your way in time. This one I will get my mate to do I think. I'm just going to run it to fix my bike and then crack on with this later. Problem is, everything is just a serious tight fit, I can't be bothered to do the work myself at this moment in time, and I sure as hell ain't wasting another head gasket and head bolts, that pissed me RIGHT off lol. Ollieh17
I had to drill holes in the head bigger as i stripped the threads and used threaded inserts.did this with the engine in the car
Calum122
Nightmare, lol. I'm always cautious about helicoils. It wants to be clocked dead on, something that wants to be done by a professional.
Ollieh17
Google threaded inserts on a website called memfast different to a helicoil slightly. Perfectly fine for a amatuer job mate
Calum122
Ah ryt, I'll bear that in mind. I think I'm lucky(ish) that the stud has snapped flush to the manifold. So I might get my mate to weld a nut to it and turn it out. And put in a new one. Just gutted to be so close, yet so far. How you getting on with your beast?
Ollieh17
Ummm its getting there. Insurance and mot sorted

Glanza-Ben
sounds like wrong size thread to me hence it went tight
Calum122
Hhhmmm, not good Ben, if that's the case then I bet it's shagged all of the Studs. Aye it was tight, like when using nylocs, I just thought that was the nature of these bolts to stop them rattling loose.
_shaun_
aye as above sounds like its wrong size so its likely fucked all the studs. although its probaly irrelavent on our wee starlet engines and ive never actualy confirmed this i was always advised not fit stainless steel bolts on to exhaust studs as they expand more than mild steel when heated so would actualy loosen up and be more likely to come off that sticking with the stock oem bolts. Glanza-Ben
Yep oem bolts are perfect i believe when we fitted akyakapotter's new engine we used copper, the nuts will go on with no force then just tighten them 48nm
Calum122
Aye, I would have but the stock nuts have just completely rounded off so I was just rebuild clean with new bolts.

akyakapotter
That we did copper bolts for the exhaust manifold
Calum122
It's okay, I'll grab some when I do I get round to sorting it all out. Won't be for a few months yet.
Calum122
Quick question...bad idea if I go Stainless Steel exhaust studs?
Ollieh17
Random fine thread bolts is just another annoying part of a starlet
