kevmcc90 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 My gearbox had a bad crunch into third when I got it so I bought another box off here and fitted it. No more crunch but not it can be hard to get into gear sometimes have to make a couple of attempts? I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to what it could be or anything to help smooth it up a bit? Is it worth trying a gearbox additive or molyslip etc? Or is it a case I'll need to get box rebuilt? Thanks in advance Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Have you tried bleeding the clutch? Sounds like the clutch might be holding on a bit. If it's a box problem it will usually be hard to get gears when cold but better when it's warmed up. I put a pattern part slave cyl on mine and it would never disengage properly. Would be a pain to get in gear and you could feel it was really notchy. Put a gen one on and it was perfect . Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 I'll give that a go man, trying to rule out smaller cheaper things before I rebuild a box Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 Found this thread about a sugar cube on the linkage that wears out http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?79298-sloppy-gearstick..-easy-fixI don't know if anyone has heard about this but i went to investigate this on my car but I don't actually have a cube these pictures are of my linkage and the small black plastic bit that's where sugar cube should be. Any ideas if this is the correct piece or if the linkage looks correct? Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 Bled the clutch tonight and hasn't sorted the problem. I've noticed when I put it into reverse the car shudders and tries to go backwards slightly. Any further ideas on this? Quote
Johnboy GT Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Sounds like a clutch issue bud. Pressure plate may be damaged or springs on it collapsed. Had it happen on my g/f's golf. John Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Clutch is definitely holding on. Don't mess with the gbox, it's nothing to do with the issue. As johnboy said above, could be the pressure plate on the clutch, or it could be a hydraulic issue. If you pump the clutch quickly 5-6 times then hold it down does it go into gear easier? If so then your looking at something on the hydraulic side, if no different then chances are it's a mechanical issue with the clutch Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 I'll try this tomorrow guys, the clutch was just replaced couple of weeks ago Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Is it ever since the clutch was done? If you fit the friction plate in back to front it gives these symptoms Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 When clutch was done a different gearbox was fitted due to crunching. But it had always been stiff into gears mainly 3rd Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 When you say friction plate what part do you mean? Sorry not too great with some of the terms Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 The driven plate of the clutch mate, the bit the gearbox shaft goes into Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Right Yeah I know what your on about now, I'm pretty sure that was fitted correct way. Would the car even be drivable with it the wrong way? Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Yeah will drive but usually the inside of the disc will foul on the flywheel so won't fully disengage. Did you try pumping the pedal? Did it get any better? Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Nah pumping the pedal didn't make a difference mate. Checked out all the linkages and they are all OK. Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 It's either going to be the clutch in back to front or a faulty clutch then mate Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Definitely mate? Not a gearbox problem at all? Quote
ROTABOOST Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 No mate, if the car is trying to jolt when putting it in gear then the clutch isn't disengaging Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 Yeah it jolts when put in reverse sometimes but if you put it in slowly it goes in fine. But if you try and put into third just sitting it won't go. But if you put into forth then third it's fine.... Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 25, 2015 Author Posted April 25, 2015 Update on this. Got gearbox off today, clutch was in the right way. Anyone got any other ideas of what to check while I have it all stripped down? I'm going to get a genuine Toyota release bearing as I think mine was whining. Any help would be great Quote
kevmcc90 Posted April 25, 2015 Author Posted April 25, 2015 This one from Id workz http://id-workz.co.uk/toyota/starlet/starlet-glanza-ep91/drivetrain/competition-clutch-stage-4-sprung-4e-fte Quote
Sefton-EP91 Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Have a read of this mate http://www.ukstarletowners.com/topic/92476-competition-clutch-problem/A lot of people including myself are having issues! Possible cure is slave cylinder!Hope this helps! Quote
RobSR Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 Have you pulled it all off and checked no springs have popped out? Sounds like symptoms of that which i have experienced before. Quote
