fuel cut is more a instant thing then hesitating/cutting out. fuel cut is more of a bang. and surely you would of got fuel cut in 3rd and 4th gear.

look on the top right corner on the screen. is it showing GPRS or gprs (caps or non caps), if lower caps its not activated.

Ollie, its worth fitting a wideband to your car once you start modifiying the engine. Ok it costs £150+ but in the long run you can monitor the afrs aswell as saving money and paying a tuner £100 each time to fuel tune it. Its saved my engine from going bang.

i know the person you brought it from thats all, its tapped since he got the engine done. its def not piston slap cause i got the same forged bits and mine taps at start (minor) then goes once warm. but i noticed on that engine it taps and taps lol. its a head jobby either cams,or tappets me thinks.
