Finally got the head a little bit better tonight, semi polished up with autosol will finish it tommorow to a mirror finish, A lot better anyway. Will take it back in for cleaning at work when its done Rest of the parts for the engine build should be ordered tommorow so i can crack on with getting the engine assembled! Also picked up some 3SGE Pink injectors so they should be ideal for the 5E For now before im running mega power,as my standard ones where at about 90% Duty at times! Few more pics anyway Injectors TT -

Exactly what me and my dad are thinking. Im thinking its span a bearing due to something, If it was mega high load in a high gear i would possibly think rod failed, Im thinking at the moment a rod bolt failed or it spun a bearing when the torque came in. And yeh i will be stripping it down when i have the new engine sorted! -

Thanks liam, And i know just a shame it wasnt a month or so down the line! Yep thats what im thinking adam. Just confused to why it let go at such low load really, Oh well! And quite far off, so i will be lending a bit of money of my dad to get it assembled asap dude I know dude:( And i know its typical, i did say yesterday i was getting sick of driving it back to work and back and i want to do a load of work to it and get the engine in, I think it heard me and failed on me lol -

Annnnnnd its dead. Rod exited sump and god knows what else earlier this evening, Car was hardly on boost in 2nd gear. Plenty of oil and water etc in it but the bottom end has shit itself under no load... 5EFTE Build has sharply accelerated!! -

Thanks adam. And yeh i will have to take it back to work to clean it again. We have a big parts washer and i used TFR on it. Im going to polish up the exhaust side and combustion chamber anyway so it will have to go back, give it a clean by hand this time before it goes in. And yeh seems to be a common way of doing these heads looking at everyone elses, just hope im copying everyones properly haha Thanks! Hopefully will give it a healthy dose of torque especially with the compression, its a bit lazy at the moment and peaky for short tracks! TT -

Thanks mate, its a royal pain in the arse mind its still not all finished hence why it looks slightly rough, need to go over it all with sandpaper/wet & dry etc yet also a few more hours needed! Thanks shorty, And a bit of both mate. I understand what you mean its a proper art, Inlet side all i have done is gasket matched and very slightly opened the inlet out and removed the poor casting in front of the injectors, However exhaust side i have took a fair bit of material out evenly, and after the valve seat the main part people port is the big lip sticking out, so thats gone and smooth -

Few more updates, Nothing major parts wise yet as im still saving to buy it all at once. Chemically cleaned the head, finished porting bar polishing the exhaust side and gasket matched everything. Also picked up another inlet which i have ported and gasket matched, Deburred and cleaned up the casting on as well as removed a few unnecesary bits, cleaned all the throttle body, sensors and knifedged the inlet to it also and matched the TB to the inlet Valve springs are also here, sticking with stock 4EFTE springs as im not going to be revving this to oblivion lol. Started smoothing the fuel ra -
My mate has an 09 S3, basic mods and a map, mine pulled 5 or so car lentghs upto an indicated 150, he then wound me in and would have probably came past if i hadnt braked. Clocks said 165 and AVCR said 148, he reckoned 165 but i dont know! Fast cars when fettled.. This was on VF24 1.1Bar...

I was using rainsports all round dude, wet and dry day. Lap times were consistent top times against many very fast cars, (Laptimes are in my build thread). It wasnt a problem the oversteer if anything it was good especially when we did the damp day. Under very hard braking and through the chicane the back was always trying to come out. Next sprint im going to lower the car a bit more and have another fiddle with the damping, see if i can make it neutralish with a bit of oversteer, This was advice given to me by the tech guy there and andrew mckenna (Ice driver) What setup did you have on th
-
I do agree with what your saying lads but even under braking etc they try to oversteer, yes it is good but last thing you want to be doing is trying to fight oversteer all the time
-
I think the people with RARB arent driving fast enough and just think it feels nice and direct, Which to be fair i believe may be true as it might feel nicer but on the limit i think they would just plant you in a field Get it on a track and fling it into a corner going too fast, they oversteer Right speed and lift off, the oversteer. Going quick into a roundabout etc, they oversteer If i had a RARB there would be no way i would have done the laptimes i did that sprint day. Personal opinion mabye and its possibly just my car but i was looked at like i was stupid by a rally driver and h

I agree to all the mods above as said before barring the RARB. As a cheap basic mod for a standardish car yes i agree it will work, But if you have coilovers and braces etc i think they promote too much oversteer if driven very hard I have had mine on track twice now in the wet and dry, And there wasnt one instance where it understeered. If you were on the very limit it would oversteer first regardless of what you did. I was also taken out by the scrutineer of the track day (ICE Driver instructor from sweden, mental driver) And he helped set the suspension up to dial out oversteer. I also s

If I was going new I would still spend more than £150 if you are planning on using it properly. £150 would get you a bag of shite... I have worked Saturdays at bikeshop for the last 5 years and its my hobby. £300 New is what I would recommend minimum, if second hand £200 should get you something good Word of advice though a lot of 2nd hand bikes are knackered hence being sold, yet look perfectly fine. Be careful with older bikes that look flash also as parts are harder to find!
-
The apollo is a load of shite, The carrera isnt bad at all for £250 but they have skimped on a few things to get the price down What will you be using it for dude? Proper attempt at mountain biking? Road use also hammers bikes if they arent looked after, so a cheap one isnt worth it as it will end up needing most of the bike replacing at one point! My choice if i was personally spending about £300 would be this all day long http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Giant-Revel-4-Mountain-Bike-2013-Hardtail-MTB_56301.htm They also do one with discs for £350. Not a major upgrade though
-
I Will fire you some through mate, And yeh when im in the bike shop the amout of people that come in and say i dont want to spend a lot, like £150 Lol and there always shocked when i say £300 Even £300 Is a basic one, but will put up with a lot of stick Anything less than £300 Retail will be a bag of shite Fact unfortunately
-
Sorry dude but unless you go 2nd hand £300 gets you nowhere these days. Cheapest thing i reccomend is a base spec giant or similiar at about £300

Thanks dude Few more updates on the engine here, Got the valves out ready to be prepped etc. This also allows me to give the head some more porting, especially on the exhaust side, what a load of shite that side is! So much restriction again. Will give it a few more hours tommorow and put some photos up. Here are 2 from tonight, Head still needs a real good deburring in the top, and a chemical clean/Blast Thanks for looking TT -
Yeh i will get back to you on it dude, just messaged him to see what specs he gets that compression ratio off so will see what he says Thanks
-
Yeh true, there is possibly a difference as the chambers are massive.. And just gonna go for a 1.4mm gasket with the porting as well. Should make it high 8s possibly!
-
Just asked him again and he said Definetely 9.1 compression on a stock block with a 1.0mm headgasket. Makes sense though if the engine is 9.4 As standard with the Domed pistons, surely with flat tops 9.1 will be what it will take it too? Would go well at 10,1 Lol!
-
Hmm i will message him and see im confused now haha
-
Whats Alamo based the compression ratio on then do you think? I spoke to him again last night to clarify it and he said if its all being fitted to a standard 5EFE with a 1.0mm gasket it will be 9.1, and a thicker gasket would take it into the 8s? And is there a lot to take off out of the head to take it to this sort of ratio? Thanks
-
Yeh its not far i can measure it if you like And lol yeh should be nice at 9.1, was panicking for a bit there thinking it would be wayy to high, glad its not This is what he has sent me Hi, Nothing to worry about 9:1 is a great compression ratio. The 4e/5e have big chambers in the head so even with the flat top pistons they keep a low cr. If you wanted to lower the CR I would run the 1.4 or 1.6mm gasket to get you in the mid to high 8's Thanks So that gives me a few options now! And yeh i will probably swap the pulley over if it isnt a harmonic one
