Head gasket gone, urgent advice needed
funny onion replied to Arnold's topic in 4E-FTE Engine Discussions
Arp headbolts aren't a must imo. I've bolted a head down with oem quality bolts (can't remember the make but they were from idrees). A third of the price. But if you're doing it do it right I suppose, but even when the pistons melted the head never lifted and the headgasket was fine. -

Thanks everyone The kit is from idrees, happy with it and fits well, only thing letting it down is my rattle can spray jobs haha. Thanks Adam! You're a star haha my phone doesn't agree with the photo bucket app. -

No coilovers and forged engine are the two big things left on the list really. I'll put some photos of the interior up with the cage and braces fitted -

Still got it! Just didn't like the big gap between the bumper and intercooler. If I ever come across a cheap jperformance or other chunky core I might put it back on -

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm trying to think of something useful to do with the melted pistons haha. Turns out there's not a lot they're good for other than paper weights. Forged engine needed! -

Thanks guys Agreed it does need to be lower but I don't want to go any lower without coilovers :/ -

few photos of the damage for your viewing pleasure! this was number 4 (the worst) -
Nice day, finished repairing and respraying the front bumper and functional engine again meant i was finally able to get out and get a few pics since the livesports kit went on (most photos were taken by sam, he's better at pointing and clicking than me haha ) comments welcome! (i know the spray job on the spoiler is poo, i'll have another go at some point) Just thought i'd chuck a few photo's of the worst of the piston damage in here, be rude not to!

Never ran it and probably never will (mostly because I'm tight haha). Spent my first year at uni looking into chemical engineering etc. and how it can affect combustion rates and the other factors that can affect it also. I agree, Unless the car is mapped for it, it won't make a shits worth of difference. On these cars the standard ecu wont see if higher octane fuel is going through, the engine shouldn't be knocking considerably on 95 (only if its been mapped for higher). Intake temps play a big role in the nature of the combustion. There are more things needed to improve performance other t

We've put SAMs engine in lol and yes we have a lock up. Team work, he took engine out wile I stripped turbo kit gearbox Etc and swapped bits over. No messing around haha. Done loads of engines on these between us haha! -

Yes ecu was supplied and fitted by tuning developments. Happy to say its now running and driving again, we don't mess about! -
What's people's thoughts on laqcuering? (No idea how to spell that haha). I can never get a good finish. I use rattle cans and have tried different methods and flatting etc :/

The timing light wasn't at the lock up when we got the car recovered. A friend borrowed it to use while working on a clio (i think). I would've had to somehow find a way of getting it the following day with no car, time drying which the engine could've been out. Good old excuses excuses. So for the sake of this argument then lets assume that it was my fault because the timing was out. -

So it was my fault my engine melted because I was speeding? And that anybody on the drag strip or track shouldn't be doing 100mph really? I don't understand? I paid £600 for them to make it safe at high rpm's etc. other than say that I shouldn't have been going that fast you don't seem to be able to give me a mechanical reason as to why you think it failed. The head was off in early December and the static timing was checked and double checked with a timing light. It was fine. I didn't check it before it went to be mapped because that's one of the most basic things they should check. And clea -

So tell me what you think caused it then? I don't mind people defending them or whatever just looking for peoples thoughts on how it happened. As I said they have hundreds of happy customers and I'm not trying to take that away from them. It's incredibly easy to sit there saying all of this stuff when is not you in this situation (that's not a dig by the way). I've been advised by numerous professionals that it is VERY LIKELY an ignition timing or map issue. If it was slightly too advanced it may have behaved accordingly on power runs etc because they don't involve holding boost solid at 100 -

Yeah I understand it was getting towards if not on the breach if what the stock internals can take. But that relates to the tensile strength etc of the components. How much shock and load they can take. The pistons don't spontaneously melt unless there's a factor which has caused them to do so. I've not got the time or money to start sending bits away for testing like injector flow testing etc. ill be buying a gasket set and bearing set from idrees very soon and will have to do some ringing around until I get a reasonable price for a crank regrind and head skim so I can rebuild another engine -

Yeah they have a lot of happy customers. I was a happy customer until yesterday! Lol. I've Now contacted them explaining the situation so hopefully we can come to a resolution soon. As for now I just want a running engine in it and to get a running engine for SAMs. Spec: -td04 wepr externally gated at 1 bar -Standard injectors (never me had an issue with them and no issue arose during mapping to my knowledge) - walboro 225 pump that has been tested and is fine - mapped on 95ron and always ran on 95ron. - emanage blue - dyno mapped then road tested - Sard fpr and all the usual stuff like -

Come guys I don't want it to turn into one big argument. People can make their own minds up. If there hasn't been another recent case of this I wouldn't be so sceptical. But as said theres a chance we could've just been unlucky. I have my own thoughts on it because I know myself how confident I was in the components such as injectors fuel pump fpr etc. At the end of the day my engine failed and this is why. If this helps anyone in the future then at least someone has gained from this, because I certainly haven't. -

1 bar on td04 and made 228.7bhp. Ill look into getting the map off the ecu but right now it's getting a running engine back in it that's the main thing :/ -

It had been td04 at 0.8 bar since September and the head came off in December and it was fine, I can dig the photos out. -

All 4 pistons melted, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't injectors... I had the head off about 4 months before it went and everything was mint. I have photos of when the head was off to prove it. The bores etc were mint. Im not spending money getting the injectors flow tested. what's the point? I'm not going to get my engine back at the end of it. The replacement is going in with a different set of injectors too.
