project Impulse Purchase (threehundred's Glanza V)

alreet pet, way ay mun, canny, byker grove...

Now that's out of my system I can begin :)

To cut a short story even shorter, I had been looking around for a nice old VW for a while, maybe a mk1 Golf with a 20vt conversion, mk2 Golf VR6 etc, but I just couldn't find anything that really ticked all the boxes. There were a few things that I had my eye on, but people were asking ridiculous money for cars that weren't worth anywhere near the asking prices. I've always had a soft spot for jap hatches after owning a Charade GTti many many years ago, which was great fun.

I'm expecting my first baby in a few days, and I haven't had a car since my Arosa (on Air ride and Porsche wheels) was stolen just before Christmas last year, so my Wife has been pressuring me to hurry up and buy something! I gave up looking for a VW and started broadening my search on Pistonheads. I'd seen some crazy Glanzas at Lakeside and Southend cruise which looked seriously quick, so I decided to have a look if there were any for sale. I spotted a white Glanza near Brighton which sounded pretty serious, 300bhp, Garrett turbo, forged internals etc which was tempting, but there was quite a bit of stuff that didn't really appeal (red Rotas, standard brakes (!!!), Evo bucket seats) so I signed up on here and started looking through the classifieds. Top of the list was Iamlegend's car 8)

For not much more money than the white Glanza, it looked and sounded like a serious bit of kit (I don't need to go into detail, I'm pretty sure you all know the car.) I rang the owner at 11am, had a chat about the car, pretty much made my decision whilst on the phone, shot into town to get the cash, got fully comp insurance, jumped on a train, and arrived in NukeHassle at 7pm after a 400 mile mission. Iamlegend showed me round the car, took me for a drive with me in the passenger seat (my insurance docs hadn't been emailed through in time) and I was smitten. Cash was handed over, paperwork was signed, and I was on the road by 9pm in my new ride, on the long drive back to sunny Essex.

The car exceeded my expectations! Comfy, refined, reasonably quiet and not too bad on fuel (I got about 300 miles to a tank, admittedly whilst driving like a 96 year old woman) but when I put my foot down for the first time, good lord  I'd never driven a seriously quick car before, and I think most people would agree that this thing is seriously quick! I don't drive like an idiot, I'll never redline it or thrash it (even though it's probably built to take it) but when I have a little play, it never fails to put a smile on my face.

I haven't even taken any photos of it yet (I know, great start to a progress thread) but I have a few minor plans for the future; possibly remove the big boot spoiler, get hold of some carbon cup mirrors, get the heaters fixed (they stopped blowing hot on the way back from VW Players today, passenger side carpet is dry so I don't think it's the matrix), maybe some bodywork/paint but that's a long way off.

So to summarise, I bought a 283bhp Glanza with zero knowledge or experience of them, to serve as a family car when my baby arrives, hence project Impulse Purchase 8) I'll get some pics and specs up soon...

weirdly, the heaters started working again today after two days of non-warmth?! So I'm guessing it's a loose connections somewhere instead of anything too serious.

Full Cat1 security fitted today :)

I will actually get some pics up soon, I know that a progress blog without any pics is pretty dull.

Are the heaters blowing cool air but not hot? If so I'd be checking thermostat and cooling system

they were for a couple of days but its working fine again now, blows hot within minutes. hmm.

Lol defo need some pics in here. You bought a stunner of a v tbh mate. And good to see legend finally has another auto buddy to stick up for his lack of being able to drive with a clutch lol

auto all day long mate

good car..

where you from in Essex??

im most likely one of the glanzas you have seen from lakeside or southend..

Basildon mate. are there any local meets? and do you know of any specialists in Essex? most of the work was done at TD but Warrington is a bit of a mission from here.

if you need work mate..

ring ATSPEED racing in Rayleigh and ask for colin...

he knows about my glanza, so can assist you..

as for local meets, its very rare..

me and russ are trying to arrange a date for an end of year meet..

brilliant, thanks fella. yeah keep me posted, would be good to meet up with some fellow Glanza owners in the area.

apologies for the lack of updates or pics, I feel kind of slack as I've been super busy with family stuff, too much going on to wash it/get pics/do anything constructive... but rest assured I've been out there driving it and enjoying it! I'm not a flat out thrasher but I have an occasional reserved play and it never fails to amaze/scare me. good thorough detail next week, maybe a bit of paint and bodywork on the horizon too.

wow I've done really well with this thread haven't I? Had the car for just over a year and I've managed about 2 posts and zero photos, good work :)

I moved house about a month ago and after a year of totally faultless performance and reliability, the V decided it was time to die... on moving day, on the way to collect the keys for the new crib. perfect timing. I left my house, started fine, driving as normal, got to a roundabout and pulled away when it suddenly lost all power and started spluttering. pulled over, just about ticking over, engine rocking like crazy, turned it off, wouldn't start again. sat and waited for over 11 hours to be picked up by HIC rescue, who eventually cancelled my rescue and told me to get a taxi home and try again in the morning (but that's another story for another day)

I trailered the car to Quest Motorsport on Matt Heard's recommendation. they had the car for a few weeks as it turned out to be quite a major job. I'll post up full details of the rebuild when Keith emails them to me, but let's just say the guys at Quest found a few 'questionable' bits and pieces which (I have to assume) were put into place by Tuning Developments when they did the forged build before my ownership (it's Iamlegend's old car).

https://www.facebook.com/119513264874/photos/pb.119513264874.-2207520000.1411589054./10152728380834875/?type=1&theater have a look at that link, valve shims reshaped and refitted after being skimmed with an angle grinder anyone? hmm. I know Iamlegend put about 5 grand into the forged build and to be honest it's been 100% reliable and brilliant for me for over a year... but to find something like that (and plenty more, details to follow) in a relatively new engine build makes you think. When I bought the car, everyone was raving about TD saying they are the best in the business and the only people to take a Glanza to for any work... now all I'm hearing is stories of fully forged engines failing after minimal time on the road.

more (and better) updates to follow, I'll try not to be so slack this year :)
