Kingcarr
Morning Guys, This Morning on the way to work, I was nearly at the office after taking it easy waiting for her to get up to temp. On the final stretch I decided to give it a little more, but not the bull beans, and there was a big bang, like a misfire. immediately turned the engine off as it sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders, and rolled the rest of the way to the office. Got outside work and popped open the bonnet, oil has sprayed all up the back left of the engine bay (around the alternator and brake cylinder) so I got my generic mobile mechanic friend to come and look... as there is now a pool of oil underneath it! He said the good news is there isn't a conrod or piston hanging out the back, but there is a lot of oil around the rear of the engine on the alternator side, near a sensor? He had to bugger off as he was booked out, so we are inconclusive! what could it be? Please help! cheers Nathan
Kingcarr
I would have been just coming into boost @ around 3k revs... if its any use!?!
daniel_g
Stab in the dark, crank oil seal has let go ?It could literally be anything though, pics etc will give us all a better idea.
morgey
Dipstick popped out?
Kingcarr
dipstick is still in place, im working at the moment so cant get pics! it instantly ran like shit after it went bang, sounded like something popped out but I walked up the road and didn't see anything? oil has pissed out of somewhere as the firewall, and brake cylinder are covered! it seems to be more around the area of where the knock sensor on the back of the block is? like under the inlet manifold area... daniel_g
Would suggest HG then.
Kingcarr
HG wouldn't cause the oil to piss out though would it? I literally have a puddle of oil under the car!
daniel_g
Yeah it can do, depends how bad it failed, ive seen some cars lose litres from HG failure. But as i said it could be anything really, just guessing here.
Chris Green
Dipstick tube would be a good call, check it's still in where the tube meets the block. Although it wouldn't really explain the bang.
Kingcarr
or it not running right? suppose the bang could have been a backfire? but still doesn't explain... will pop out and have a wiggle at lunch

Phil
I hope not! well its just a guess. wait till you find a hole in your block before you panic Phil
Kingcarr
just went out and had a look, theres a mix of oil and water, so might just be the HG? its not overheated or anything though? theres jizz in the oil cap! Chris_GlanzaV98
Perhaps the HG was on the way out and a missfire has somehow acted as a catalyst for it I would tow it home just to be safe mate
Taggy
lets pray for a HG failure, it will certainly be hell of alot cheaper!
Kingcarr
im just concerned about the amount of oil that poured out when I stopped. surely that amount wouldn't have come out of a failed HG? especially as the engine was off as I rolled down the hill to a stop? half tempted to see what happens when I start it... if its a rod or piston would it turn over still or would it be a mass of metal mess? maybe remove the spark plugs and turn it over? corofin12345
dont turn it over.. if oil has poured out from somewhere then you have no oil pressure.. you will spin a bearing if you do.. get underneath and try and source where the oil is coming from Edited December 17, 2013 by corofin12345

Kingcarr
I'm gonna be optimistic, if it's the head gasket, what sort of money is the parts list going to cost?
yaristurbo
Gasket set from anywhere full engine ones are about 120 and then need a cam belt kit
Kingcarr
headbolts too? is it worth upgrading stuff? I got told I can get the head skimmed and checked for £40, plus an additional £80 for port polishing, angling etc... worth doing?
