Beastmode panda
I know it's normal to have a high idle on cold start.. But mine seems to be around 2k? Then drops to what it's always idled at which is a touch below 1k. Anyone know any reason as to why it would do that? Once it's warm it's fine, whenever I stop at lights or whatever it's perfect. Just only whenever I start the car.. Come to think of it even when it is warm, whenever I start the car again it will go straight to 2k revs then drop straight away to just under 1k and settle there. Anyone?
Zeldoz
Choke? It's normal on all cars I thought?
Beastmode panda
Yeah I know that lol, I said I know it's supposed to be high haha . I just think mine is abnormally loud?! Well, what does everyone else's idle at on cold start?

Beastmode panda
Not sure if it's due to the cold weather or what.. But it's only been like it with this engine since I put this forged one in. My old engine was fine. I only bring it up because it's a bit annoying when I start my car up with a 3" front exit lol, I must do my neighbours heads in!!
lee0100
i had this problem when i bought mine turned out to be a vac line from the inlet, double check those dude make sure nones split etc hope that helps
Beastmode panda
I did think about some sort of leak.. But then thought why would it be a leak if it idles completely fine when it's warm?! Hmm, will check anyway though.
JamesP
Have you checked the coolant? I had the same problem with mine when the coolant level dropped down and wasn't running through the throttle body properly and was messing up the idle control valve. There's a plate underneath that you can take off and clean out the valve. Doing that cured mine so could be a similar problem?
Beastmode panda
Brilliant answer, will try that asap! Thanks buddy.
LukeSR
My n/a used to idle at 2K when it was cold.. Would drop down to normal after 5 minutes or so. In the summer it was like 1.2K, i never worried about it.
Beastmode panda
Maybe it's due to the cold weather too? Hmm..
Skimmy237
Mine done this when my coolant was low dude
Beastmode panda
Will check coolant then! . Cheers boys great help.
mech5107
Mine idles at 2300 when cold (0 degrees). Around 1700 when summer time.
zurgieSR
clean out or worst case scenario, replace your icv.
Chris_GlanzaV98
My forged lump has a high idle aswell mate even when warm its around 1200 dont worry to much rob just check for basic vac leaks, wont do it any harm though bud !
Jamie5414
Mines idles at 2k also when started from cold. It soon drops down to around 1300 though (in less then two minutes), then down to 1k I put a corolla manifold on my n/a and it sat at 2.5k at cold, and after I took a look at it the throttle cable rubber part was stuck in the actual throttle arm, making the cable tighter. I put the rubber back and it went back down to 2k idle like normal
turbo Grant
That icv on the end of the manifold dose f all really. I've binned mine off and it's fine. You can also get a high idle from the pcv valve if it's faulty
daniel_g
I dont think there is a starlet out there which doesn't have idle issues. Aslong as its not hunting, cutting out or sitting at 3K i wouldn't bother lol.
zurgieSR
higher idle when cold will speed up wear and uneven heating/warping on parts, thats common sense, it may not cause any major problems over the time of ownership but on the otherhand, it may. For the sake of sorting it out, it could save you or the next owner a whole lot of heartache.
