Djaniero
Can anyone recommend a good starter tool kit to work on my GT? I don't trust any local garages, so my mechanic mate usually does all the work on my cars, but recently I've started to have a go at things myself, with random tools I've acquired over the years, which has been mega difficult at times. So I was thinking maybe I should get a tool set to make these jobs easier, and learn more about the car in the process. Any suggestions?
TurboTobz
1/2" socket and ratchet setMetric set of spannersAnd the very basic hand tools will keep you going at a basic level
ryan lang
Halfords usually do a good deal on a socket set. It's about £120 but sometimes they have it on offer for £100Also I think it comes with a lifetime guarantee http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&productId=862455&categoryId=255215&langId=-

daniel_g
Other than a ratchet set,Good spanners, swan necks and ratchet ones are handy but not essential.Selection of screwdrivers, pliers, soldering iron etc. are all handy aswell These cars are piss easy to work on aswell so its a good starting point for a beginner

I've always been there to help when others have worked on my car, but finally wonna give it a go myself. Like you, other have said they're quite easy to work on, as long as you have the right tools. Spoon_tuned
one thing i would like to mention is get yourself a set of ratchet spanners there a god send...and if you can afford it get yourself a battery powered impact gun they save so much time and can easily remove tight bolts that are seized

Starlet-Joshy
That halfords set is pretty much ideal for any beginner starter kit! Cheap and comes with the tools needed for many jobs.
Zeldoz
When I first went at things alone. I bought a socket set for £9.99 from halfords over 2 years ago. Still does anything I need. I buy everything I need so for future playing I have various tools. My setup is still awful. But the only thing I haven't been able to do recently is gearbox oil which is a piece of cake! Just haven't got a 21/22mm socket lol!
Djaniero
Thanks for the info guys. I'm swaying more towards the halford kit, but would something like this suffice to get me started:? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Halfords-Phaze-52-piece-Mechanic-Tool-Set-Popular-Imperial-Metric-sockets-/271325878370?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3f2c485862 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Halfords-48-piece-Stubby-Tool-Set-/121267856188?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item1c3c20a33c Then obviously axle stands and a jack as suggested ?? ryan lang
I'd go with the cheaper of the 2 I posted personally but I do a lot of work on others cars aswell as mine so my tools get a lot of use
Djaniero
Thats the thing, I would only be using my tools once every other week when I have the time. So wondering if I'd really make use of all the tools in the Halford kits you posted?
Starlet-Joshy
To be fair mate those 100 piece halford kits are shit on!, i need to get one myself tbf!, Wouldn't really go for those two seperate as that one 100+ kits got most of what you need in! Depending on what jobs you wanna do is depending on what tools you're gonna need to have atm, as worth buying bits over different periods if your not going to be using it as much! But cant recommend enough how handy those Halford kits are for the money!
seab
Halfords professional kit is good, and ratchet spanners are sent from the gods beleive me. Dont buy a 1/4" drive set as you wont undo f**k all with it as you wont get the leverage, I only use my 1/4" drive stuff for pipe clamps or limited access where ive already cracked the bolt. You want a good 3/8" drive set.
