dan106
Noticed today that the engine in my gt has a tick/tap that gets faster with revs etc. Now i thought this was just noisy injectors because i only ever heard it on idle, but today whilst driving past a load of parked cars i noticed its always there. So now im wondering if its the tappets, how easy are they to do/adjust? That and i found a snapped cam cover bolt today when i pulled my intercooler off, so ill have to try sort that out i spose while its off! Any help is apreciated, unless someone wants to do it for me and ill pay them ahaha
Socks
Just a quick thin,g try disconnecting your Idle control valve, see if it stops... These can make a ticking sound when there goosed!
dan106
That's the one on the throttle body? I do think itll just be the rappers needing adjusting, I've never done tappers before though
Socks
No. Left of inlet on the end. Earths run to one of its mounting bolts. Worth a try. To see.
dan106
Ah yeah I did unplug that one, made no difference

dan106
retension cam gear Phil That sounds expensive aha, is that the pre load gear on the camshafts? by sound of it u never done it so not a first diy jobby affaik u need the proper measuring tools to to measure the new shims make sure to get a mechanic friend to guide/help you I know you need the feeler gauges and that, i was a mechanic a few years ago, the confidence to pull stuff apart has faded a bit these days, not so much suspesion and bits like that, but im a bit nervous about making or breaking my engine nowadays aha! Ill have to see if anyone i know is up for doing it lol Also, where would i get a replacement cam cover bolt/nut, ive had a 3sgte in bits before but i cant quite remember how theyre held in? Johnboy GT
To dig up this thread. Did you ever find out what the ticking was mate? I've checked my pre tension and my valve clearances but I've still got the same ticking that increases with revs. CheersJohn
dan106
Na still does it, haven't actually done anything with it yet, it's a 170k engine after all I'm not surprised it taps slightly
5T4R7ET N/A
Manifold gasket or its cracked? I know this can cause a ticking noise
dan106
Actually that reminds me, it was really bad before because the downpipes nuts had come Loose and it was blowing, stuck some nylocks on it and it went back to the normal ticking, which I've never got rid of
StuDoc 72
Im yet to see a starlet that doesn't tick
Johnboy GT
It's just because it's a newly built engine and I can't remember it ever doing it before it was rebuilt. Granted that was a long time. Just worried is all. Maybe it's meant to be like that.John
StuDoc 72
If it was rebuilt did you check that they did re-tension the cam?
Johnboy GT
Yeah buddy checked that, which hadn't been done but I did it last night and the noise is still there. I should really get gold of a local boy with a forged engine to see if it sounds similar.John
StuDoc 72
Have you tried you idle control valve? Like I said mate I think they are all ticky I know mine is. I wouldnt lose sleep over it.
Johnboy GT
Going to try the idle control valve tonight just to rule it out. The tick increases with revs so I hadn't Tried it yet. Yeah I'm probably being paranoid.Cheers buddyJohn
dan106
Well my major tick was actually the idle control valve, after you unplug it you can still hear the injectors
msg1
I have this same problem, the noise started right after my forged rebuild. I picked up the car from the mechanic and there was that noise. He claimed to adjust the tappets/shims since, but same old noise...plz post a pic of this valve. I'll try this next.

msg1
Well I just cleaned my idle valve, could have sworn the noise was greatly reduced after running the valve back together. Switched off the engine then restarted and the noise was back to the same old, sigh...
