what C series boxes can be used in a starlet?

Recommended Posts

Guys

Any gearbox specialists about?

what c series boxes can be used in our cars?

Can a c59 or c64

if not...

what gear sets can be fitted into a c52/c56 box?

Thanks in advance.

couple of links ive be reading

http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Toyota_Gearboxes

the lotus uses the c64 and has upgrades due to 3rd/4th gear issues we suffer in the c52/6

The c64 is the same as the corolla tsports.

The diff/driveshaft fitment varies between boxes so this could be a problem, but in theory you can unbolt the bell housing off of your starlet box and bolt it on to any other c series box. But you need to check to see if the new box has bolt holes for the starlets mounts. If not they can either be drilled or you need to pull the entire box apart and use the starlets main casing.

But im not sure if the later 6 speed internals fit in starlet boxes, in theory they should be might be trial and error.

I cant comment on the f.d but turbos do seem to have a tall one. My levin box maxes out at around 150 at 8200. Whereas turbo boxes are more like 170 at 7700 roughly.

As a general rule of thumb though. Gears have to be kept with boxes of the same amount of digits. So a c52 or 56 could swap between a 59 or 64 (not sure on this as its a 6 speed) but not in a c154 or 160.

From reading wiki

The Glanza has a different 3/4th gears

And a final drive of 4.3

This true?

Phil

no from my knowledge the non lsd turbo boxes c52/56 are 4.1fd maybie 3.9 ( deffo not 3.7fd the ratios just dont match the rpms and speeds ) and the oem lsd are 4.3fd ( deffo !! ) with a 5th gear ratio of 0.725 to match cruising rpm to the non lsd box

i have fitted a oem lsd 5th setup in a non lsd turbo box ( rib ) and rpm dropped almost 500 on the speedo

Buy The TRD finale drive set up from RHD then phill :)

Tooo short 4.7 final drive

Would just be constant wheel spin

I think the 4.1 final drive would be ideal in a gt box

Finding one will be the issue

Get a 4paw then, 4.3 FD.. topped mine out around 133mph.

Fwd drive class so 4paw would muck things up somewhat lol

If you mean just the final drive then maybe? Hard found I'm sure ?

Found this useful but still unclear exactly what boxes came with what unless I go with wiki

I looked into a celica 1.8 st gen 6 with 7afe engine as it uses a c56 gearbox which would have a longer 5th gear.

But didn't get very far with researching it maybe someone else could look into it as it's a shockingly cheap gearbox if conversion is possible

Yaris tsport gearbox final drive 4.312 with 8bolt crown wheels so will take a Starlet aftermarket LSD.

would the final driveshaft fit a c52 box i wonder.

Thats for the info

Phil

A C52 bellhousing bolted to a Yaris Tsport box should work. Then just a case of making mounts to suit.

Or see if the Tsport gearset fits inside a C52.

There are two different boxes in Tsports iirc, i had an early Tsport as a 1st car :)

The celica tsport has shorter 2nd-3rd than the corolla tsport, pretty sure the pfl and fl rollas are the same.

They also dump the mr2/s 6th gear and lsd on to either box give it a nice long cruising gear and obvisous the lsd.

Also just noticed you were talking about the yaris boxes not the corollas 😂

The 1.5 Yaris t-sports limit out 5th at like 125. That would be rapid with more power!

I would love a cruising gear..

I find 1 to 4th in a c52 are good on track, as very rarely use 5th.

What revs do people oull cruising at 70mph on a c52/56

For a low rev cruising gear youd want the Yaris D4D 5th.

Starlet Bellhousing on yaris tsport gearbox just bolts on, which makes it plug and play in a Starlet all mounts are the same

Ideal situation
