selector cable removal and auto wiring mystery
Chops replied to Chops's topic in Drivetrain & Transmission
The manu power buttons connect to a plug thats zip tied to the cig lighter plug in the centre console. The two im referrimg to plu into the selector box at the back right next to the drivers seat. -
Hey all, couple of quick questions here! I was trying to steal my white shells selector cables and gubbins the other day to fit to my auto conversion project, and i couldn't see how they were being held still in the firewall. how do you get them out, ive removed the plate and seal over the hole in the engine bay side of the firewall and cant see what else is holding it in there. also, I pulled the selector box thing out of the centre console and found two plugs of several wires each plug into it on the drivers side, one white and one blue. Presumably one is for the reverse lights, but god

Update time! been dismantling all the auto filth in the engine bay, but i need my engine crane and stand to continue with that further so i set to work in the interior. the auto's gear selector surround thing is different to the manuals as it has extra buttons to try and coax the slush heap into doing something, so that needed to come off. auto selector is easy enough, just 4 12mm bolts like the manual, annoyingly slightly shorter though so ill have to find them replacements. not the best picture i know but it was dark inside the garage at the time. the two plugs to

i got to be in the crowd for one of the last top gear shows being filmed, you can spot my face looming at the back of the crowd in one or two shots lol. natural talent i tell yer!

Ill be grabbimg a couple of celica inner cvs and the correct bellhousing from a scrappys tomorrow, have a play with it all n see.
-
Wouldnt the celicas inner cv joints fit on the starlet shafts? Just strip all the tripod gubbins off and chuck the celicas on? Thatd make things eisier!
-
well. theres some pretty heavy failure here lol. the saving grace would be if i could just use celica mk7 driveshafts, im trying to find some information on them now
-
My c52 has a mechanical lsd in it, i was going to just swap it over to my c63 as i read up that they were the same. I dont want a c160 as ive heard from many places now that theyre made of chocolate and dont like power. So i couldnt just dump the c52 lsd in the c63 and keep its og ring gear? I wonder if i could just use celica driveshafts?
-
I need a diff the right size and with the right spine count too then.
-
Someone must have an idea surely. By the look of things the splines are actually part of the diff unit itself, if i swap the diff out for a uk starlet's diff, will it sort the spline issue out?
-
heres another thought, the selector arms are mounted on top of the gearbox instead of the back of it like the starlet's, will I need to convert it or could i get away with leaving it where it is? i don't think it fouls anything, can anybody shed any light on it!
-
are they? would it be as easy as using the outside cups from the celica driveshafts on the starlet shafts?
-
the c63 has much taller gears than the c52, the final drive is way lower
-
Thats what i wanna do, just voicing concern peeps might not think putti g a 6 speed in is sympathetic to the cars nature. Found the c63 has a silly tall final drive, how interchangeable are flthe final drives in c series boxes?

Ive got a dilemma here! i have a white starlet shell i intend to build up in the near future to a good 300 odd hp, and a green all original project that im in the process of converting to manual. for these two cars i have a c63 from a mk7 celica, and a c52 with a mechanical lsd from my old advance, and ive no idea which gearbox should go in which car lol. Is the c63 tough enough to deal with a good bit of power, or should it go in the green car so i can put the known to be pretty tough c52 in the white? Is it a waste to put a mechanical lsd into a bone stock car? I need some advice!

I'm in portsmouth, you may see me rolling around town in a black classic scoob for now, ill see you about!
-
Yeah it wasnt that badly bent, and was right at the front of the box section. The job they did putting it straight was spot on, you could put a straight edge to it anywhere and its dead flat and even, no creases or buckles.
-
So i had a really good shop sort the starlets damage out, and they've done a shit hot job on it! Couldn't ask for a better job on it really, glad it was more of an expensive bump in the road rather than a big twisted everything fuckover i suppose!
-
Its either because im so damn popular or too lazy to empty my pm box, im not sure lol.
-
Ill take this! Pm me
-
damn, was it a recent buy or something you've owned for a while?
-
I could chop it out, I do that sort of thing for a living on bigger stuff and know plenty of coded welders, but I'm not sure what is the best route to take, pull it, insert it, or replace the whole leg with another one. I'm looking to do it up to sell, so its a matter of repairing it in a way a buyer would be fine with. personally, id want the entire leg replaced, but that's a pain in the ass to do. gutted, on some cars the whole front end is bolted on and can just be removed and replaced.
