I unplugged mine out of curiosity, on my old civic though, whilst doing a 4 gas analyser test at work and could see the readings go mental. Infact, i didnt have one when i first started the GT, had no decat or exhaust on it though lol. Just get a new one bud, like 25 quid for a starlet.

A few of my pals have had / got, polos, golfs and lupos. My advice is by a basic one if you can, no electric windows etc. Less shit to go wrong basically. And take that bonnet bra thing off it ffs !! Or is that to hold the car together ? LOL. Am a vehicle tech and hate doing anything on VAG tbh. The diesels blowing off IC pipes seems to be in fashion haha.

You can go a bit further than that and take out all the AC shit thats connected to the coil ignitor. But you'll need to block off a couple more vac ports, and tuck away / cut off a few plugs.

Dave, mind when you go to bleed the clutch that the clutch reservoir is tiny and needs constant topping up. Mine ran dry and took a wee while to get a pedal lol.
