Rob Scott Posted June 21, 2011 Author Posted June 21, 2011 sweet sweet, i'll pm you you fella today i made the fuel tank guard, i ended up usuing some stainless steel sheet instead of the aluminuim, as its stronger and less prone to decay. ok it weighs a bit more but i didnt use that much. i forgot my camera once again... but hannah came down to work on the car and she brought her phone with a camera on and took some pics, so i'll post them once she has uploaded them. i dont think ive put that i'm sharing the car with hannah, as she has a corsa which is her daily and only uses it for autotests, but wants a car to rally, so we goin halfs. :S i also made the bonnet, the mould was nicely cured, so i gave it another polish, and brushed on some PVA, (it stops the two parts sticking) i then sprayed the white gellcoat on and put on the tissue, then woven glass, and then bulked it up with chop strand. and i got hannah to roller it all nice and tight as i couldnt be arsed while waiting for the fibreglass to set on the tank guard i had a look at the doors, i had allready lightened them, but it was pissing me off that they wernt light enough.... so i took the grinder to them, and now they are about a quater the weight they started off as. they are a bit floppy, but shut and hang allright, so thats cool Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 22, 2011 Author Posted June 22, 2011 Fuel Tank guard Bonnet ready to come out of the mould out of the mould with the blue PVA release agent on it.peeling it offboot lid mould, sprayed with a layer of gell coattissuechopped strand matboot lid made, now needs to curefuel tank guard fitted, i made up some stainless steel straps too lightened doors i need one of these, the fuel filler pipe anyone got one?Rusted :S Quote
Galliano Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Great progress man! Coming along very quickly on the fiberglass parts. Looking forward to seeing this in full livery and covered in sh!t. Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 aye cant wait to get out in it and give it a blast fibreglassing is quite fun if you have mates to help roller it, but when your on your own all day itchin like youve got crabs, it can do your head in a bit.i cracked the boot lid out of the mould today, made this part extra thin, as its only a small panel. one layer of tissue and one layer of chopped strand. it came out of the mould no problem, and its very very light ive decided to cut off the lower bit of the boot lid, and make an ally panel thats bolted in between the rear lights to mount the numberplate and light. so i dont have to unplug the light every time i take the lid off.i also made a spare wheel holder, it will take two spare wheels no problem.the wheel brace screws into a captive nut to hold the wheel(s) in place Quote
Galliano Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Handy tool holder too! Progress is great as usual. Will you be giving the interior a lick of paint to tidy things up? Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 yeah mate, once ive got the cage and seat mounts welded in, i'll be spraying the interior white. Quote
james@cjperformance Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 you dont hang about do you lol, sorry i have another q for you, when you have made a fibreglass piece whn its fully cured do you just trim the edges up to yhe edge of the mold before cracking it out?will you be making front wings aswell?awesome work as usual keep it up:) Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 hi mate, no i crack the piece out of the mould fist, then trim it with a thin cutting disk on an angle grinder. then sand the edges with a sanding block to get them straight.i might make wings in the future, but the standard items are quite light, so gonna leave them for now. Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 i think i might make a c pillar brace and floor brace tomorrow, as they are apparently super magic, and will make my car super duper! ;) Quote
Russleh Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 dont forget to buy your fender bars tho or it just wont work Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 25, 2011 Author Posted June 25, 2011 from what i can see, the construction of the inner wings/strut mount look pretty strong from the factory, so i dont think fender braces are needed, i have seam welded them and i recon thats about all thats needed even for jumps/forest rallys. plus ive made a chassis brace that links the big hole under the car, thats where the most flex will come from, its also the front lower strut brace and sump guard mount.if i'm bored i may make some fender braces up, anyone interested? Rob Scott Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 didnt do any work on the car this weekend, had a party on the bus with some friends, and went to watch banger and stock car racing..... where i got a spoiler for free yey. its off a civic coupe, so looks kinda similar to the origional one, so shouldnt have a problem log booking it with it on. the origional spoiler was snapped you see Quote
steed Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 there's some awesome work going into this 'seo. good to see some one else appreciating one, will be watching this thread with interest. Quote
Russleh Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 more great work. i was being sarcastic about the fender bars by the way refering to your thread on all the braces you can buy that are a waste of time ha Russell Quote
Rob Scott Posted June 29, 2011 Author Posted June 29, 2011 cheers fella ;)got my entry in for the Opposite Lock rally ;) co driving in the 86' http://www.slaithwaitemc.co.uk/rallyinfo2010.htmwell i fixed the filler pipe, i used a bit of side impact bar from the paseo's doors that i chopped out. ;)and i single skinned the spoiler as it was too heavy, and mounted it to the boot lid.and been preping the body, only a few small dents/scrapes, so not bad al all and a pic of what i left the car looking like today Quote
