1991 starlet owner Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Hi all, thinking of changing the starlet as would like to experience a more day to day friendly car and like the look of the Clio 182 probably in blue. Has anyone had any experience with these and suggest what to look for when buying one? I know these clios must have the Cambelt done when its time. Many thanks,Tom. Quote
StuDoc 72 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Like Trisk says. Gearbox. I had a 57 plate twingo gt turbo the gearbox went on it with 15k on the clock lol and renault had it for 3 months waiting on a box coming. Mind you I also got a lovely £2k cheque for my inconvenience but still. That said if your not concerned about reliability or build quality becuase both are non existant (interior will fall apart and gearbox / electrical issues will be rife) Apart from that they are epic cars. Very quick and superb handling. Has to be one of the pastel blue ones though!! Quote
scottyb Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I think they're nice enough cars, but have to agree with reliability, i had a 55plate 1.2 clio before the starlet, and although it never broke down as such, it needed alot more work than my starlet ever has. A few airbag sensors, a few abs sensors, 2 springs snapped and needed replaced, and it had 4-5 exhaust mount replacements too, although that could have been due to the aftermarket exhaust. And the speakers suckkkkk haha. Have a look on cliosport for things to look out for if you decide to go for one. Although the people on the forum arent that great tbh, they bum the trophys and say every clio should have speedline turinis etc. but can be helpful when looking to buy. Quote
AdamB Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 I didn't think they were that comfortable with quite a harsh ride tbh. My mate took me out in his, handled really well and was pretty nippy round town, but not sure if it would make a friendly day to day car. Quote
yaristurbo Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Did a clutch on a v6 one much more fun to drive :£ Quote

_shaun_ Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 guy i work with hand a mint 172 cup with like 40k on it had it 3 months and even after chucking money at it sold it at a loss cause stuff just kept breaking. was a pretty nippy car when it did work tho Quote
morgey Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 My mate was deciding between an ep3 and a clio 182 or 197. Basically said if the clio had the k20 and gearbox it would be amazing. They werent as stable at higher speeds but were realy active and responsive to driver inputHe ended up going for the ep3 because the engine and box were better and was easier to deal with day to day Quote
rinseep82 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Shite. electrics will fail sunroof will leak u will be getting the key fob changed every few month cause the imobaliser is wank my missis had 1 spent more time working on it than it was on the road pile of horse poo Quote
Glanza-Ben Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 (edited) I had a inferno orange 182 cup and that's the only car I've never regretted having its pure awesome I had ktec remap v6 air box ktec inlet cams and more work went well and cornered flat out every where the only problem I found was the seats are not comfy a few mates have them and are fine to just make sure belts and dephaser pulleys are done as expensive job, gearboxes are fairly easy to do on them and they tend to go more on the jc5 Williams Clio box not the 182 jc5 Edited June 17, 2013 by Glanza-Ben Quote
TurboTobz Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 (edited) They aren't all that bad. They are good bang for buck, make sure cambelts done that costs a lot I've had a fair few Clios and they aren't as bad as people make out, my mates 172 never ate gearboxes themselves some how he kept fucking the diff circlip, on seperate boxes. It's notable that he doesn't give his cars an easy time though. Edited June 17, 2013 by TurboTobz Quote
Addymk2 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 My mates was great; quick, handled really well, didn't sound the most inspiring... Then with no prior symptoms just after a service it shit all it's oil out and now needs a new lump lol Quote
Glanza-Ben Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 One thing actually my mates did 3 times was randomly drop a valve lol Quote
aaddzz123 Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 FrenchThat said I have a 306 dturbo run about and it's pretty bliss lol.... Wouldn't go french for my pride and joy again. Money pits. Keep it cheap and nasty using zip ties, duct tape and over night parts from the scrap yard haha Quote

TurboTobz Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Liquid yellow all day long. Ford frozen whites a winner though Quote

richglanzav Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 my mates had a 182 for ages and its never had any gearbox or electrical problems. but i know a lot of the do as they r french lol. but its a very nice nippy car. however for a big 2 litre it aint that special in straight line its mainly the handling thats superb. but whatever you do when youbut one make sure you get one thats got receipt proof of the dephaser pulley and all new belts being done as its a massive and costly job on the cliosports.
