What do you do for money and why drive an ep82?

Recommended Posts

An old topic I bet, but still an interesting one....

I wonder what people do for a living and why they own a starlet, is it a first car, a track car etc?

I'll kick it off:

I'm a senior Flash Developer by trade, with a side business importing cars and parts for pocket money...

I bought the ep after having one 7 years ago and wanting a cheap second/track car again.

I work as an Operations Assistant for a Corporate Haulage Firm

Bought the Starlet as wanted one as a first car after my dad had a white SR (when they were new)

Although as you all know since moved onto my Paseo, due to the unique/cool factor of them, and let's face it, they're just Starlet's in disguise :ph34r:

Im an Administration Assistant in a Law Firm but as a side earner/hobby i fit sound systems to peoples cars

I first bought a starlet as i wanted a better car than my micra when it got stolen and torched. I really wanted a Black SR but with over 2 months of searching and being without a car i gave up trying to find one and found a mint blue Starlet S. I didn't mod it much as i was still looking for a Black SR when just under a year later i found one, i bought it straight away and it's now my current car.

I am a year in industry (pre university) student, bought the starlet by fluke, as i needed to get rid of my deteriating Corsa (i know shock horror, it sucked and backed up my hatred for Corsas, i also don't think the Corsa would have made it home from the garage that the Starlet was at), test drove the Starlet and loved it! bought it and it is still my every day car! I have always oved jap cars to but had not heard of the starlet much before i bought one!

I'm in my final year studying Automotive Engineering, finish up in a few weeks.

I used to rip the arse off a kia pride, but always wanted something a bit quicker, i always remembered this little 1.3 turbo off gran turismo 1, did a little research, worked stupid hours over the summer two years ago and earned 4 grand in the process then went and bought myself the glanza.

Loved it then and still do, even though its a black hole for money with me having spent over 5 grand after buying the bloody thing!:ph34r:

Well I can honestly say, having worked in multimedia for over 7 years now (starting as a designer, then Director Lingo programmer and now specialising in Flash AS2 Application Development) that the south of England, London etc is the place to be for Flash jobs...contractors at the moment are commanding around 400 quid a day for a good one, so if you're starting out, I'm sure you could get a nice little wad of cash

@Nightspirt: £400 a day for a flash monkey? Awesome. I'll be looking to sharpen my flash skills soon, but is there really that big a demand for flash websites?

@Enzo: The single worst thing you can do to a website is put a splash screen on it. Unless it's a full flash website that might take a while to load and you need to warn users of that.

And on-topic. I'm less than a week a way from finishing a computer science degree. I earn money being a security guard, and building websites. I'd love a turbo converted SR Starlet, someday.

Fogdoggydog, yup, in the city £400 a day is the going rate at the moment for a seasoned AS2 developer. I used to freelance in Manchester a few years back and take home £3.5k a month after tax....not quite that good these days as I'm in a permanent role  ah well.

It's not so much Flash websites, as most monkeys can do a flash site, it's more games, e-learning and applications. For instance, my current project (that's for delivery on tuesday!! feck) is power point...in flash...with a full rich text editor, search functionality, dynamic multi language support, a fully integrated media library with support for audio, video, animation and images...full back end library that can be modified and navigated by a user (with user and role support) and a print controller to collate presentation for print at 200dpi....all that sat within a c# wrapper

That's where the bigger money comes in and that's the sort of thing that's in demand at the moment...or atleast that's what is coming through on the CV's I've got recently.

so are you any good with flash then??

Enzo mate, I'm happy to help out with a flash intro or any flash loveliness no problem at all, but as fog rightly points out, having a flash intro is all nice, but people always skip them as they make no real contribution to a site unless the site is flash and the intro animation builds into the site navigation? plus you then have to warn people they need flash to view it and all that...but if you want something flash, anything really....even a driving game for the site when I have time I'll write one no problem

Back on topic, I've always had and will always have a soft spot for the baby toyota with attitude ^_^

Yeah, wheels picker sounds good!

And that flash-based powerpoint type tool sounds BRILLIANT! I'd love to get into something like that once I graduate. There'll be a PM winging your way shortly.

[edit]

Let me know if you haven't got that PM due to the forum going tits up
