micrat
Well - it's happened again - for the 2nd time I have bought a Starlet to run around in, and then got all attached to it!!! Bit of a backstory first - I got into Starlets totally by accident - after having a car written off I found a beaten up, rear ended Starlet, high mileage for next to nothing - I smashed the rear end roughly into shape and then started dicking about with it - it became a euro look hatch, lowered on cut fiesta and jag xj6 springs - a small van and then a b-road blaster in its time with me, before being sold to my friend Dan so I could buy a 'nice' car again, I would have kept it but for the irreversable things like the rear damage and welding a roofrack on etc...I had fallen a bit in love with it - anything I threw at it was handled with ease, even though it wasn't that quick, good looking, or anything...it just had personality... Here is my old thread and a few snaps of that one... http://www.ukstarletowners.com/topic/52823-98-solida-exhaust-splitter-wheels-11812/ Soooo anyways, the 'nice' car was a highly modified Primera GT which was comfy, nice looking, and very quick, not quite as quick however as the internals of the engine which mnaged to spew all over the A27... So skint, car-less and annoyed I decided what I needed was another Starlet - and the hunt began... There's the backstory lol...part 2 with the new Starlet coming up... Ollieh17
the old starlet was awesome haha. Many bodges yeh, but appreciate that more than people who chuck a car and a shed load of money at a tuning company(nothing wrong with that)!!! micrat
Right - part 2 - There isn't really a lot of pictures so far as 1) the car was never going to be a project and 2) it's ugly as feck! So I picked it up - hanging, 115k, no service history, knocking snapped exhaust, brakes were attached but didn't seem plumbed in, 2 non functioning stereo's installed (WTF), and dirtier than a 3am kebab. Bought the old MX5 wheels back off of Dan, chucked some new tyres on, fitted 4 new shocks, new discs and pads, new cat, droplinks, rear shoes, backbox, serviced everything bar the cambelt...erm...cleaned it - it was full of bricks, glass, wood - the interior was ruined, it was like driving around in the bottom of a bbq all coal and smeg everywhere! Oh and fitted 1 head unit - that worked The paint was missing...well...at least the lacquer! Honestly don't know what this little thing has been through... Anyway drove it around fell back in love blah blah blah, currently really embarrassing work in progress - Will give no hints as to what direction it is heading in, lets just say hopefully slightly different to most on here...the bank holiday weekend next month is a 5 day mod fest and also paint for her - so hopefully big things to come soon...in the meantime this is the progress of the old girl so far, and the total state I drive it around in...keep getting snapchatted LOL Oh and the rusty filler cap is a nod to my old civic from back in the day... But it's a project so fuck it!,I see potential in that little green beast!, look forward to seeing what you do to it
micrat
Cheers Josh, was reading your thread earlier too...like the direction it's headed!Yes the paint (on mine) is shocking...50 shades of ghey. All of the starlets for sale seemed to be immaculate and about 1500 quid or 400 quid poobags like this one! micrat
Well...she passed her MoT with 1 advisory - blowing exhaust...winning...now to make her all silly and do all the things I couldn't before the test lol. In todays news... Such stripping, much lightness, very arch gap, so dirty, such roof-fuzz...wow... Big...BIG things coming bank holiday weekend...next weekend am out for my Birthday and should deffo not be near tools haha. Edited April 7, 2014 by micrat
micrat
Soooo not been up to a great deal... Managed to find my mate Dan a sportif with 84,000 miles, 8 months MoT, 4 months tax and half a tank of juice for...£160!!!!! So went and got that and had like a 3 hour long race home lol...crappest convoy ever! Then today went to the scrappy and found me some seats - suzuki swift buckets, a bit like glanza seats... Need a good clean obviously...then bodge them in somehow!
micrat
Lows and ghetto filter - done... Put a cone filter on, but I can't deal with the noise anymore, am getting too old haha... So simply made a gauze to silicone in place of the standard filter, definitly an increase in sound, but nowhere near that of a cone... 99% of the time a boxed filter produces better results anyway, due to the air temps being lower, but lets face it I only had about 30BHP to start with haha Also fitted some Pi springs, have heard they were good, but also they are red, and we all know that adds power too, right?! Shocks are all only a few months old, I think a lot of peoples problem with lowering springs is they fit them on knackered shocks and expect the handling to be transformed! The drop looks OK to me - have had lower before. but for a daily b-road blast its about right, don't have to keep lifting for bumps and potholes so much...apart from a perfect road lower turns out slower sometimes! 2 more days then I can really get stuck in... Oh and forgot - took nearly an inch of slack out of each a/r/b droplink too - makes a difference!!! Edited April 15, 2014 by micrat
Starlet-Joshy
Nice updates buddy!, Liking where this is going! Will keep my eye out on this
micrat
Stuff has happened!!! I am writing this after *checks clock* 32 hours of working on the old girl haha. Not going to pretend the end results are amazing, and there is still a lot to do, but it is much less embarrassing now haha. Strip and prep: Painting bumpers pov spec grey as per my last one... Rear washer line disconnected and plugged... Stubby exhaust a-la grinder!!! Slept in the car...grim...was mid job though... Slightly smaller mirrors - haha... And boom there you have it... I am literally too tired to even get decent pics at the mo but here you have a NATO green starlet with satin black window surrounds and bike mirrors...make of that what you want LOL. Nowhere near done, wheels going black, some yellow bits and bobs coming...you'll see... Opinions? *cringes in advance* Ta - Mike.

RobSR
Hahah good work. Just so you are aware..it appears you've fitted your rear springs upside down, the tighter coils go at the bottom not the top..
micrat
Hahah good work. Just so you are aware..it appears you've fitted your rear springs upside down, the tighter coils go at the bottom not the top.. Thanks, you know what - I googled this, looked back at pictures of other cars I have had, the full works ... still wasn't sure haha ... ended up going on the assumption that the closer coils were at the top as the average little bump wouldn't use them whereas once you have a lean on they would be worked ... also the front were that way round and they are slightly conical so took the option away ... nevermind, they will be back off for some altitude adjustment soon anyway grinder > coilies ;) (on my budget anyway) just wanted to see how she settled. Will sort it out then. Cheers for all the feedback - just picked up my mirrors (the proper ones) will spray them and bung them on... Didn't deliberatly drive by this today....but as I was there... Winning, lol. Looking at that - less tyre is what I need - shame that the 4 tyres were an essential and the most money I have spent ... annoying.
