OH... interesting but extremely hardcore graphic

The contamination was nowhere near the scale of the Chernobyl disaster, even though both were class 7 nuclear incidents.

Reportedly nobody has died directly as a result of radiation poisoning from Fukushima, but the plant and surrounding areas will be behind wire for hundreds if not thousands of years.

One of hardest things to stop is the spread of the radioactive material via weather, leakage, wildlife etc. Most clean up efforts fail as a result of these factors.

Studied nuclear physics in great depth at university and it I find it totally fascinating!

What is radiation? Or become radioactive?

Have a quick look on google or wikipedia as they will no doubt explain it better,

Basically if something is radioactive it emites radiation. The radiation can be in the form of waves (such as x-rays, gamma rays etc). or very small sub atomic particles (electrons, nuetrons, protons etc). More weird an wonderful things can be emitted but for the majority its either a wave, particle or both.

When something is radioactive and emits radiation it is called nuclear decay.

Things are radioactive when the element is unstable- it has too many particles in the atom nucleus or its energy state is too high. In order to reduce the number of particles in the nucleus, or to reduce the energy level, it emits particles/waves as radiation.

Other things in the area can become radioactive because the radiation interferes with the surroundings.

In terms of people and living things its dangerous because it can interfere, alter and damage our dna and cells. This can cause mutations and hence cancer.

Well explained. So them cars cant be touched in either way

Most things are radioactive to some extent.

An elements radioactiveness if you like is usually given by stating it's halflife. this is the time it takes for the initial radiation level of an element to fall to half of the original value. This means that it is an exponential relationship and therefore never actually reaches a zero value, it just gets smaller and smaller and smaller.

These cars (and everything else in the area) will have high radioactivity levels but they will fall very quickly to start with. but they will stay a lot higher than normal for hundreds/thousands of years. They health risks aren't that great in the surrounding areas like in these photos. i think the risks are more for children and teenagers. but the government would be hung drawn and quartered if they allowed people back and then there were a load of people reported with cancer due to the radiation.
