  1. i have a few weeks to sit and research and decide what i want to do...for sure its not an easy decision. people from the outside looking in would probably be thinking its a straight forward decision, but us starlet owners know its not that simple
  2. your last line is what has me in doubt...i'd really not like for that to be the case...i really need to find a stock one around and beg/ask for the owner to take me for a drive yeah,,,as you and Calum indicate, the rs model does seem to come basic, but maybe you can get lucky and get one with the creature comforts installed from factory if i go this route....i'm certainly NOT about driving around a car without a/c, p/s, speedo, etc whether its a weekend car or not those are essential to me. island temps are approximately 30C daily...a/c is a must
  3. thanks Robsr...the evo does sound a nice overall car...so ayc is only on non RS models?....i have to do some more reading on the different types/models (rs, gsr, etc)...from the little reading i did so far, i got the impression the RS was a basic model with daily driver comforts missing i'd not have to worry about rust so much i suppose (Caribbean/Barbados tropical island), as we get our cars from japan mostly. yeah, its a difficult choice, but i can't have both i'd really like to find a local with a stockish one to get a feel for them, but most i know are modified which i suspect changes the whole experience.
  4. celica gt4s are not very popular on my island and those will be harder to get parts for it i went that route i'm getting too old for stress now...lol
  5. your honor, i respectfully decline
  6. thanks jayc and calum for your input...yeah i'm not too concerned about general running/maintenance costs, as its just a weekend drive regardless. i'm more worried about major things breaking, like gearboxes, engines, differentials and with the evo 9 the mivec system (i've never been a fan of vtec, vvti, mivec, lift, etc..i just figured these are more things that can go wrong).
  7. now i suppose in everyone's life there comes a point where they consider selling up the starlet and getting something else. i must say i'm at such a point, but there is no urgency about it so i have time to really decide what i want to do. IF i did sell, the ONLY option is a Mitsubishi evo 8/9. 1) a little back ground---i've been involved with starlets since 1999 (ep82). I bought a replacement ep91 in 2006 which is now mildly modified --nothing too aggressive. Its in pristine condition, works great, gives no problems, has all comfort features still in place (a/c p/s, etc.). Year 1998, so its about 19 years old now. its a weekend drive at best, decent gas mileage if driven sensibly. IF i sold this, i doubt i would ever be able to get back one in this condition later on if i changed my mind. Negatives - It seems getting certain parts is becoming harder and some stuff is discontinued. its getting on up in age 2) what peaks my interest about the evo 8/9 --- the plan would be to keep it relatively stock with just maybe exhaust and suspension. try to get something between 2006/2008 which is younger age/body wise. i suppose having about 300bhp in stock trim would be more than enough for a weekend drive. negatives -- its a heavy car, i read its not especially efficient on gas (i assume if driven sensibly it would be but i dont know--any input welcomed), more things to fail like differentials, etc. (i assume they should be ok with stockish power??) its either one or the other, i cant have both. whatever the decision, the vehicle will be kept for another 10 years and i'd want to not have major car problems----the usual maintenance/service would be done. so for you guys who have experience or close friends/family with stockish evo 8/9s, what is your view on them...is it a car you would trade in your ep82/ep91 for? your opinions/votes are appreciated.
  8. http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?51852-turbosmart-Eboost-2-rpm-issue i hope you have better luck than me with my eboost2 but then again blitz is japanese like the car,,,so you should find a good reading
  9. i think its the green single wire sensor at the back of the thermostat housing the grey triangular 3 wire sensor is for the ecu as far as i can remember
  10. 15 inch OZ Racing F1 rims fit over 277mm discs, twin pots and ST202/celica carriers will have to confirm, but i think the specs are ET37 and 15x7J
  11. i drove in a gt with the old D2s, i remember it being very stiff indeed back in the past tein super street were the rave, i assume because they were so little competition and felt stockish, but today i'd say meister has made a good product for the everyday driver
  12. http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?57592-MeisterR-Zeta-R-Coilovers-or-BC-racing-colivers scroll to the middle, all the different coilover spring rates in there
  13. excellent work stu...it keeps getting better and better i dont know how possible it is, but if you can get lucky with maybe a 1.9 60ft at some point and a decent run in---it will be amazing time wise
  14. http://www.toyotagtturbo.com/forums/showthread.php?20735-FMIC-comparisons-King-thread all the information you need with pics greddy is what i used on my ep91...fits great even with a/c system still in place and minimal shaving of the front bumper anything over 2.5 -2.75 inches thick will require major bumper cutting---unless you have a/c removed
  15. does anyone know for sure what front and rear spring rates came in the old and new versions?
  16. any diagnostic codes?
  17. did you check the clutch slave cylinder to see if its leaking? how does the fluid look in the master cylinder? ---clear or dirty/black?
  18. like RobSR mentioned...gt2860RS (disco potato) with a smallish back end 0.48, 0.57 (vband), 0.64 a/r (may be a bit laggier that the other two).... the disco potato is tried and proven by many or gtx2860R if you want billet it would be better on a 5e response wise, but i suppose you can forge and increase the rev limit (possibly cams later on) on the 4e you should be fine for drag racing (assuming all the other supporting stuff) on the stock 4efte, stock rev limit with a gt2871r with a 0.64 or 0.86a/r running at 6/10 psi daily till you get your other stuff in order, you may find that a starlet with a 4efte ct9 10/12psi and mods may be very competitive against you on the circuit/track -----you may stand a chance in the drags of pulling back in such a car (depending) just understand it may feel very sluggish in the low/mid range until its "fully" sorted and quite a few locals have run the gt2860....just ask around
  19. hail sir, i have a few questions and i sincerely would like to see you spend your money and get reliable/decent results is this a stock 4e or 5e engine? are you planning to forge anytime soon? how much boost do you plan to run on this stock engine? how long have you been on the starlet scene in Barbados?---do you have anyone to advise you locally? maybe part of the starlet club or know any older ep82/91 owners (many own evos, stis, etc now lol)? will you be running race gas or water/meth kit on the stock engine? my opinion, that turbo is too big for a stock set up, you will most likely be below that turbo's efficiency range ---have you heard of a 300whp white ep91 from way back when?---they used a similar turbo on that forged bottom half at 2 bar.....it will be better suited to a forged set up and higher boost again, i hope you dont take the above in the wrong way, but as a genuine concern, bajan to bajan
  20. thanks boss anyone using a non-oem oil pump?
  21. is this the same part? was looking recently at oil pumps and saw my oem/toyota is stamped by Aisin AND Toyota on it while an Aisin oil pump is also available from the other parts dealers, but obviously it does not have the toyota stamp on it are these the same quality? but just with a price difference i've seen this before with other parts too --clutch master cylinder, water pumps, etc i know toyota outsource a lot of parts to different manufacturers, but is the quality control the same??
  22. yeah, i had to change the oem hose clamps for the screw up type as the oem ones kept oozing out a little coolant ever so often regardless of how i fitted them up http://www.hcl-clamping.com/Worm-Gear-Hose-Clamp-US-Style-P14 like those
  23. drop phil a msg...he did a lot of hillclimb and track...maybe he can give you some pointers as well
  24. read the 2 treads...everything is in there
  25. i did an auto to manual conversion a long time ago...my oem "o/d" light used to flash continuously, so i just put a piece of tape over it, others have removed the bulb completely
