Could be the strut it may have movement.. Failing that, bushes? Or when you binned it you may of damaged something else you've overlooked?

The ignition your using, it's definitely giving the gauage a good connection. I would rewire both neg/pos If that fails, potentially a faulty gauge. Short it on the battery and see if it stays on constantly and doesn't flicker. Potentially a faulty gauge...
