turbo comparison: td/vf vs gt vs gtx
AdamB replied to gorganl2000's topic in Intake, Turbo & Exhaust
Yeah ATP mate. Well I've seen the .48 ages and ages ago, so can't be something new? They are a Garrett dealer as well, I've had turbo's from them in the past with no issues, so not a company I wouldn't trust. Might be worth dropping them an email and finding out? Find out if you can purchase the housing seperately? The GT2560 is a GT28, IIRC its the same turbo that comes on the SR20 motors. -
I'm looking to do Rockingham 19th March. Got a few things I need to do on the car first though.

Hmm that's strange. Maybe I'm misreading something... -

I can only find the T3 5 bolt discharge housing to purchase seperately. Found the .48 T3 4 bolt discharge but only as part of turbo's. I assume its the 4 bolt you want? So must be able to get the housings on their own. I'm sure the company in America I use had them listed before, but can't find them now. Probably worth getting on to Owens to see if they got any knocking about. -
I can imagine 4E's going down to compression ratio's of like 7.4:1 maybe even less, but I think to get a 5E that low would need some serious work. Damn that's a shame ! I bet there was some great history there, those names bring back some memories haha.

Which turbo pal? -
That's fine, I take it you on a 4E? It's had low compression pistons fitted, so it's been apart before. Must have had new rings. Hard to judge without a full spec list. I faintly remember the chap you're on about, I don't know any specifics about it though. Was that on a 5E though? Have to remember the larger displacement of the 5E makes up for the lack of pressure compared with the 4E. I can imagine a 4E being on such low pressure, but not a 5E. Like I said, need more of a spec list to judge, or to do a leak down test which will provide more accurate reading.
-
Have you got any engine build data? Spec sheet? How many miles / km's on the motor? It can be purpose built to be that low, but that's just daft in my eyes. If there's a ring sealing issue then yes it can raise the pressure.

It makes no difference what so ever, you could have 10 psi across all 4 cylinders, does that mean it's okay because all cylinders are equal? There's service limits for a reason I can imagine the BMEP is massively down! The service limit for a 5E is 140 psi, or there abouts. As well as this, when oil was added the pressure shot up 50 psi, usually indicating a sealing issue within the chamber/s. Is the test definitely being done with wide open throttle? I suspect that those are the kinda readings with the throttle shut, and around 100 psi on a 4E, might be a bit off on those figu

Compressor housing is larger. Won't make a difference unless the compressor wheel is larger.

Need to rev the motor to probably like 11500 rpm

Get another gauge and test again, but this doesn't sound good.

Meth kits are becoming more and more popular over here as well, like I said, no matter how good a fuel you have people always looking for more. I'm not too informed regarding turbine sizes in cm2 if I'm honest. Garrett do offer a .48 housing, off the top of my head though not sure if these are offered for **28 series turbo's. If you have a search over on TGTT, look at some of Spuddy's posts or in his build thread if it's still there, I'm sure he mentioned that he stayed at the .48 housing till something like 440bhp (fly) until it started choking flow, that was with aftermarket cams thoug -
Ultimately depends what you use the car for.

This might help you out http://blog.perrinperformance.com/garrett-gtx-turbo-comparo/ http://blog.perrinperformance.com/garrett-gtx-turbo-comparo-part-2/ Yeah we do get some good pump fuel, although it's never good enough. Funny thing is, although we get good octane ratings, other people who don't have that luxury are still making better power... Says something about the way things are done on this Island. -

The flow has nothing to do with the spool time. Yes they do generally make on average 10% extra flow, but the spool is the same as the GT series turbo. Using a dyno graph to look at where engines make power, and compare setups is ok, although the numbers they make I wouldn't believe, too many variables especially across different dyno's, air temps, tyre pressures etc etc. There's a much noticeable improvement in boost and throttle response with a Garrett compared with a TD series turbo. You may not see it so much on a dyno plot, but in real world conditions on the road there is -
Yes, ones Helical and ones clutch type.

Can only really comment for Garrett turbo's. There's no difference in spool between GT series and GTX series turbo's. -
Yes pal. 13.8 - 14.4 V ish.
-
Agreed, sounds like alternator. Get a multimeter on it

I don't believe Toyo do the R1R anymore mate. That's not to say you can't still get them through old stock that's laying around. Prada's are wank, AD08R's all the way.

Haha, just makes me laugh that unless its a "GTR", everything else is shite because it's either "newer" or "heavier". Back in 1985-86 when the cars were designed safety wasn't as strict and there was no such thing as Euro NCAP ratings which manufacturers work towards, so of course weight is a thing the Starlet has going in it's favour. I'm sure we've all seen some of the horrific "piles of metal" these cars become when they've been involved in a shunt. Maybe you could just say I've evolved with the times You don't know what I paid for my parts, and neither do you know how m

Do a search on here, I think it's Gorganl2000, has written a guide on everything you need for a 5E build.
-
Sorry. I forgot that Starlets are the best 4 wheel invention, even though their as old as the Egyptians Not much trouble then :D It all comes down to you at the end of the day pal. Their fun little cars when they work, but how much are you willing to pour into a 20 + year old car?
