whitestar Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) I have an opportunity to get a forged 4E-FTE that has been run 50 000 kms. It's been dynoed over 340 hp with td05 turbo. Is 50k kms alot to a forged engine that powerfull and should I be expecting some major problems with that engine in the near future? From what I heard, it's been mainly in road use. No track days or dragging. Edited March 4, 2015 by whitestar Quote
akyakapotter Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Just check it over for health id say compression check any signs of leaks ect Quote
Snow Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 50k isn't a lot it's only 30k miles but either way I'd be more worried if it's been service properly over the amount of miles on it Quote
akyakapotter Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) Agreed not alot of millage at all Edited March 4, 2015 by akyakapotter Quote
whitestar Posted March 4, 2015 Author Posted March 4, 2015 Ok thanks, good to hear. I think the engine has been built between 2008-2009. The owner built it himself, so I guess it has been serviced and maintained well. Going to see it today. Taking my compression tester and stethoscope with me to be sure it runs fine. Any last minute tips what to check? Quote
jimmymac101 Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 always worth seeing if he has the receipts for parts as it would good to know what parts are used and some work would have been done by a machine shop! James Quote
whitestar Posted March 4, 2015 Author Posted March 4, 2015 Yeah, he has receipts. It has cruise head gasket, JE pistons, speedvision valve springs, stainless valves etc. Also externally gated greddy TD05g16 turbo with a cracked manifold. The head has been machined, just not sure what has been done. Skimmed at least that I know. Quote
WallaceGlanza Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 One thing to check would be which bearings it is running, the ACL ones supposedly have a short lifespan. Quote
Charlie28 Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 Never go on someones word, i've learnt this the hard way! Remove the spark plugs and sump and have a good look at the internals before you purchase! Quote
whitestar Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 The engine had low compression on cylinder no. 2 so not sure what to do now as it would cost a big pile of money to buy it first and propably some more to fix it. Compression test results were around1: 1452: 903: 1454: 145 The car had been standing in a parking hall all winter since august. It had been left there standing as the manifold had cracked from two places. We ran the engine warm before doing the test. We didn't put any oil in to the cylinder and I don't think it was WOT when cranking. Any thoughts? Quote
Matt1878 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 If it was me, I'd walk away.Agree here. Not unless the price reflects the damage. Quote
jimmymac101 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Best thing to do is walk away ...... Could try and fix it but you never know what over unlying issue will unfold :-/ James Quote
patman Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Can I ask what his reaction was when you tested cylinder 2? Quote
teta Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Can I ask what his reaction was when you tested cylinder 2? shit im been caught selling a kaput engine Quote
patman Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 shit im been caught selling a kaput engineYeah I reckon that's the case aswell mate bloody disgraceful Quote
whitestar Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Haha, he was cool as ice and told it had been working fine ever since it was built. Told he was a bit confused and promised to check the cylinder 2 later and get back with the results... Honestly, my engine had (has) the same issue on cylinder 2 and still the engine seems to work just fine... Quote
5e colin Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 dont buy it mate unless its for peanuts and have funds for rebuild Quote
Phil Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 If it was ryna lairds engine (guessing here) then its sold and some body else likely bought it,. though i see it was advertised as 130 across the board so prob not him. Phil Quote
