Socks
Well. Its been nearly two years since this thread has been updated.... SO! Here goes! The car has been parked up for a year while ive been busy with other projects and various other duties. I decided I wanted to get on track more, this thing was laying around so decided, sod it. Track Car.The thing was already reasonably spec'd, few tweaks here and there and she would be ready! So gave the thing a bath. The current spec list was: Power Getter ExhaustDecat PipeHKS Actuator 0.7barHKS Mushroom Filter50mm Springs & Standard ShocksFMIC KitPowerflex Rear Gearbox MountShort ShifterRecaro SR3 on ZEP RailOZ Superleggra Wheels & Parada'sOEM LSD Box So first things first! I got the car weighed at the local weigh bridge.Accurate to within 5kg. With all the interior, ICE, seats. etc I was happy with that! So weight saving started! Once stripped, noticed a water leak into the boot. Was coming from the rear lights.... New Seals Then some sound deadening removal. Ill get this painted inside at some point! Rear Wiper Gone: More Engine Bay Shite, including ancient alarm (I have immobilised the car in a different way) Fitted the other 2 Powerflex Polybushed mounts and some Magnecore HT Leads. Did a full service and put some Castrol Edge Supercar 5w60 Oil in. Along with a fresh dizzy cap and rotor arm, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter. etcA Low Black Sun Strip as the Seat is so low.... and I removed the sun visors. Then fitted some 195/50/15 Federal 595RSR Tyres. Then finally, a trip to see Nick & Mike @ TD to get this fitted: The car made 185.0bhp at 1bar. Then it was time for Blyton Park again! Got 2 very close mates who I do track time with who have Ep3's that are tweaked to a pretty high standard! Had a great day, was a nice cool day. Had no troubles all day. It was very hard work to try and stay with the ep3, but considering money spent, certainly cant complain! The tyres were really really good! Very impressed! After this day, there were many things that came to light, where improvements needed to be made and mods needed to be fitted! Updates Soon.
akyakapotter
looking good mate my rear tyres came out looking like that after japfest silverstone session lmao. this is going to turn in to a full blown track car i can see it now. cheers nick.
jiggaman_16
Epic street / drag car Balls out track car just another day in the life of the socks
Socks
So, before the 3rd track day this year, the car needed some improvements! First off being Brakes. The stock Toyota Brakes were great on track but after a day, they sounded dreadful, it had taken its toll! They wouldn't have done another.... The discs were fine and in good condition. but the pads not so much! So thanks to Amjad.... The noises went away and these things are shockingly shit when cold but when up to temp.... Jeez. You can feel the back go light, more then enough power to lock the front wheels completely. Even on semi slicks up to temp too! Then to try and close the distance to the civics, some suspension/setup work were needed! So opted for Whiteline's Front Camber Bolts & Rear Anti Roll Bar. Then had the whole thing setup to my preferences at a local KwikFit on a Tiger Laser Align. Opted for No Toe Angle and -2deg front camber. These changes made a huge difference to the cars behaviour that is for sure. Then to keep an eye on things. Stack Oil Temp Gauge in a custom mounting plate... This would reveal an issue on the next track day where thanks to a heat spell of 30deg ambient. Oil temps were getting worrying! Followed finally by a hypersport shifter (combined with an interior one too) Shifts are super short now! Bit more weight saving: Cabin looking proper now. So it was time for the next track outing! Car performed Great! Felt much more stable and really planted compared to before. However, oil temps were a real issue. 4-5 laps of Blyton was seeing it soar to over 120deg at which time I was backing off and heading in. So lots of short sessions! Which was annoying! The civics were much closer this time and the car was much more competitive... Was struggling with understeer on the long sweeping left hander at Blyton. But on the brakes and in the slower corners the Starlet is far superior to the Ep3! More setup and Changes needed tbh! See some video footage here: So.... again things to improve.... Oil Temps need lowering. Oil Breather System.... Erm. It needs one.... Its going to need a bit more power on larger tracks to stay with those Pesky Ep3s! So maybe a TF035 at some point.... More to come folks
jimmymac101
Love a good track car build! Two questions.....1: where the glanza stand now? An update is needed 2: your wife/girlfriend must like you alot to deal with the starlet fever you have James

Calum122
You can't knock those Honda's. That's one thing I noticed about the Starlets out on track. Every one I've seen needed to pit for a little breather, compare it to the EK9's or EF's which would be out all day like on the limiter.... Looks like a great day though. Looks like a great day though. Generally N/A cars dont struggle with temps as much as turbo'd cars..... Anyhow..... Got my Grex Oil Cooler fitted now! Its certainly sorted out the oil temp issues. I cant get temps above 90c now hehe At Cadwell on the 13th July. So we shall see how she does!
MarcChurch
Matt, how do you manage to run -2° of camber?I've got the same setup as you..Shocks and springs with the whiteline camber bolts and I thought they could only adjust to -1.5° camber?Marc.

Socks
So! I did several track days with the above setup last year. Improving the car each time, in small ways. Adding: Cusco BMCS Triple Core Civic Radiator (This one was important as temps on track are hard to manage) Oil Breather System that can cope with added boost Paddle Clutch again to cope with more boost# My own civic rad brackets: All fitted up. Then started putting breather system together which was a complete DIY job that turned out great! Then I ended up getting this kit for £250! lol. Couldn't turn that down that's for sure. Sent the turbo off to good ole Liam to get rebuilt, with a Billet Wheel. Liam does a great job as always. Get it all fitted up: Got an AVCR off a local for sale page on fb for £100! Got it all finished: Then it was mapping time. Made good power too! lol whoops. Sorry engine Anyways, onto Blyton for a shakedown! Car performed so well all day. The tyres on the front were fucked, this was there 5th track day. So i turned it down to 0.9bar, even then was spinning at this corner exit. So much fun tho! The amount of people that came over and asked first of all wtf was under the hood but then said its hilarious to watch on track. Mixture of the tripod thing and the noise it makes. It puts on a show haha! It was a great day, nice to see GlanzaMac too who popped in to say high! Slowly over the afternoon it got more and more moist until it eventually caught me out on the brakes and it span lol. I nearly held it but it was going round! Then a video of the highlights with some good battles! All good fun! Cadwell again next in May!

SKINY
Lovely colour in them, 2 questions, how big is your fmic core ? Where did you get the wee plugs for the rear that where leaking ? Cheers
maerijn
You can get those plugs cheap at the dealer
adzy
Nice build socks. how do you find the civic rad for coolant temps? I struggled with mine on track, but like you was also seeing over 120 degrees oil. currently fitting an oil cooler so I'm hoping with 30 degrees or more pulled out of the oil should help the coolant. Also think my coolant was probably slightly too concentrated which would have led to poorer cooling.
wakeabby14
Dont suppose you would swap your top mount kit for a ram horn kit from wepr ;) Wish i went top mount now gutted haha! £250 was a bargain for that kit. Great GT!

On a hot ambient day on track cant get it over the thermostat temp (82c). Oil Cooler wise, I can still get oil up to too hot, but its after much longer sessions, so maybe a bigger core at some point, but its not a concern right now! Socks
So! Id been having an issue with the coolant slowly moving into the overflow bottle over time (2-3 track sessions) but then not moving back. Having replaced the thermostat, rad cap, radiator. etc trying to sort it throughout the year. I decided to bite the bullet and do the head-gasket just to rule it out. Also would give me an opportunity to see inside the engine to see what the score is! So! Off came the head! It looks great inside, obv carbon built up which backs up the mileage..... But the bores and head looked great! So gave her a scrub up! Thats better Then re-assembled with a new Toyota Gasket and these: All torqued down tight, and Cadwell Park around the corner. Time to see how we do on those Water Temps!
Socks
So! Onto Cadwell! With new bigger tyres on the front, the old ones had done 5 track days And new brakes, disks were warped big time after the late braking at Blyton last time, so new disks and inspect the pads.... Another day in them yet :p...... (which there was lol!) So off we went to Cadwell, this with a good handful of mates. Think there was 4 EP3s, Dc2 & Mk5 Zetec S Fez too. My good friend Joe, (Red EP3 with black lip) again had some good fun on track with him as you'll see in the video.... Didnt go so well for the Fez tho! He lost it through hall bends :s Anyhoo, was a mega day! Car performed Amazing all day. Only used low boost again all day, it really was enough! Grip was so much better, altho a little scrubbage, I will get away with a slight arch roll! (on the front) New Brake Pads and a few other little mods for the next one! Enjoy the video. We were getting times down into the high 1:40s which is pretty respectable! GoPro went flat towards the end of the day so most of this is late morning where we were still getting a feel for the track/grip levels again. https://youtu.be/Jp0HVoMK_bM
Calum122
Gorgeous little car! You using this more than your Glanza then these days?
TimD
How did you get on with the water temps and coolant being pushed into the overflow? Mine did that, eventually it got so bad the car got hot and cause problems with the head and block. Not at Blyton this coming Saturday any chance are you? Friend of mine is out and I'm in the area so was going to pop in and say hi.
