Toyota Starlet EP82 GT Turbo Power Steering Deletion
Calum122 posted a topic in Chassis & Suspension
Just a repost from TGTT to make it nice and easy to find. So I've just gone through the process of deleting the power steering out from my car. Information was a little flimsy on what exactly was needed, and the right process of how one goes about doing it. I would like to take the time to highlight the way I achieved a power steering delete. Things you will need: EP80 Steering Column EP80 Steering Rack EP80 Steering Column to Rack Knuckle (Don't worry I forgot this component read thread to find out) I was told you need to swap out the Steering column and the rack and then it should fit. But the problem here is that if you swap out the column, you lose the height adjustability. And whilst you might say you never use it, it does remove some of that JDMness from the car. The way I've done it, from the interior, you'd never know it's been swapped. I've also not botched the PS rack by looping the lines. Why Can't You Use the JDM Column? Unfortunately, you can't do this conversion on the JDM steering column, not in its current form anyway. The problem is, is that the power steering rack has a very thick head that protrudes into the cabin of the car, and the non-powersteering rack has a very small head, that sits in the engine bay. The column compensates this by extending the arm on the column a good few inches further. And I looked at a lot of alternatives for this, and I potentially found a few alternatives. Toyota did another Starlet, called the Carrot. And for whatever reason, this car seemed to have an extra piece between the column and the rack, and I thought I might be able to use this piece to fix the issue. I'm sure you could, but it wasn't a direct swap and I gave up there. So you can see clearly the column simply isn't long enough to meet the rack. So my idea was to press out the universal joint on the EP80 column, and swap out the extension part on the JDM column. And after some measuring, I sussed it'll fit. Although admitably my measuring for the camera was shocking. The U-Joint is a press fit into the housing THEY ARE 16MM not 15 as shown in the image. And I would say around 40mm for the width. So the first thing you will want to do is to press out the old EP80 column U joint and free the extension rod. Then get it mounted onto your JDM Column Now you just need to fit your non-power steering rack. I didn't take any photos of this. But it's a simple on off jobby (HE SAYS!!!) On the drive on Axle stands, I swear it must have taken me 3 hours to do!! No room whatsoever. But luckily getting the manual rack in was EASY PEASEY! All you need now is the EP80 Rack to Column Knuckle! Which I forgot to get! No worries, I bought a Rack to Column Knuckle from a 2001 Toyota Yaris (Powersteering model) which was very similar to the JDM knuckle. I pressed out the smaller, column end, knuckle, and pressed it into the JDM knuckle. With that done, it was simply a case of refitting it all back into the car, the time was late and the pictures I took were naff. But that was it all done. -
Bloody hell dude. Cracking job on this N/A build. Really loving the work you've done and your personal touch. I like the fact you had the head cleaned up. Very nice. Keep it up.

@Shyam I don't think that's it, that's far too simple. If it was simply an authentication mechanism, why is it valuable. Also, why is it getting harder to "Mine". We are told there are only a finite number mathematical equations that can be solved. But what you're saying is you're using a CPU to verify transactions. Which makes no sense since why would verifying a transaction become harder to verify the more you do it. No, more likely they are trying to solve some sort of hard to break mathematical equation, wouldn't surprise me since if you could do that, people would pay a lot of money for it. And boom, that would be why Bit Coin would have value. But I literally have no idea :/ Wish someone could explain it to me haha. I get what you're saying though bud.
-
Right, again to make my point WHAT are you allowing your computer to calculate. WHAT is the maths your computer is performing. Forget about transactions, block chains, public records and coins for the moment. Someone is using your computer to calculate some mathematical equation, which is never really explained. Effectively the bit coin mining community is just one massively distributed bot net, of which people gladly accept. Who actually understands what calculations your computer is performing. That is the point I am trying to raise, and the point I find incredibly shady.
-
@Shyam Yes I understand all the Jargon words. But the bit no one seems to be able to explain, is what is the Block chain calculating. That's the bit shrouded in mystery. It has to be calculating something worth while, otherwise what would be the point.
-
@Shyam Cool. I appreciate you writing that, but that doesn't tell me what it is you are actually calculating. That's the thing that has value to someone.

The days of farming on a measly 1070 are well gone now. They sell dedicated cards for crypto mining, but the real way to do it nowadays is to invest in a server farm. @Shyam Block Chain? What does that even mean. Is my point. They are telling you yes. you earn money from solving a block chain. Blah Blah Blah. But what value is solving a block chain, someone somewhere sees value in a block chain. What are they trying to solve that makes solving part of a block chain have any monetary value. Is my point. You can talk jargon all you like and people will accept that. I'm just confused as to what maths stuff they are trying to solve that would give it a monetary value.
-
But how do you earn said Money. Oh by performing crytographic calculations, which all seems shady to me. How does this cryptographic calculation have any sense on monetary. Money is used for the exchange of goods and services, you earn said money by performing the sale of such good or service. I'm not disputing cryptocurrencies' exist, I'm disputing the legitimacy of how it's all worked out. You set your computer to mine some coin, and come back later to be X amount of pounds richer. Do you even know what it is you're mining. For all you know it could be for some completely illegal nature, for use against some completely illegal nature. There must be some value in what you're doing, otherwise why would it have any value. Is it mining crypto to cure world hunger, probably not, it's probably doing so it can break encryption algorithms. Why would anyone want to a quick way to work that out I wonder....(that's sarcasm) I hope (suspect) I'm wrong. It's either too complicated or I am simply not interested. But the whole deal seems incredibly shady to me.

Hello and welcome. Cool car you have there :D

Lovely car there bud!

This, okay it's not now, but it's back by a full government/country and the like. Bit coin could be considered a rogue currency, who is directly held responsible for its collapse. The Stamp on the Sterlin notes say "I Promise To Pay The Bearer...." Therefore, someone is held directly responsible for that.

I'll invest in it when someone can actually explain to me, why the bitcoin (or the like) has any value.

Ahh that's a pity bud. But nothing stopping you from getting another in the future. -
That shifter looks the tits

I mean it does depend on how decent a job and what not. I was under the impression you can get 6PSI out of the 4E engine. In which case you will want a CT9, should be plenty kicking about as people upgrade for th TD04, manifolds, down pipe, injectors. Yeah I can see where Nick is coming from now. If you can nab someone off the forum who is tuning their CT9 to a TD04 you could do it fairly cheaply, but it won't last as long as a normal GT/Glanza

Head gasket blown in all directions...engine swap or scrap

Cool, well it's bound to have coolant in it, you've just removed the head. be sure to smear oil in the bores to stop rust from forming. What do you mean by grind? It's a specialist job to have the head skimmed. I doubt the block is warped, but a straight edge will help with that. You'll want to remove all of the valves and be prepared to lap them back in. Collets should go with the collets they came with. Same with buckets and shims. The cam caps also need to be reseated where they came from. If you're unsure, then I'm sure an engine firm will sort this all out, at an added charge. Get the head skimmed, clean up the block and fit a new head gasket. Nothing looks too out of the ordinary, just old and crusty, but not broken beyond repair. -
Yeah, that's come up well to be fair.
-
Yeah I was going to say, it's possible that it's just a cheap component gone faulty. There are engineers that could no doubt fix it, cheaper than another one.
-
Yeah cleanest way is going to be through the Arch. But unless you've wire tucked the bay, I'd just go through the A/C vent.

Ahem, you can see clearly that both Facebook and Twitter are valid log on mechanism, both support HTTPS and therefore provide secure mechanisms to logging in using OAUTH.
-
If it was overfueling you'd see it in the plugs, and it would be black sooty. Brown is a new one on me.
-
The other thing it can be is ring gap clearance. This is going to cause Piston Blow By which can lead to excessive oil burn. That said, engine oil is blue not brown.

Are the glass the same from a N/A? It's probably just the glass I'm interested, I hope your GT boot goes as I don't want it to get scrapped. But if Any EP window fits, then I would just go to my brakers, as it's a two hour drive for me. I just don't want to see it get scrapped.
