Loud knocking sound after head repair
Calum122 replied to OttersPocket's topic in 4E-FTE Engine Discussions
The dots are for the timing, again because it's a twin cam you need to ensure the exhaust valves open when the intake is closed. The dots are irrevelant for this diagnostics and we're just looking at the service bolt hole for the moment. -
Loud knocking sound after head repair

Well there are two things mate. Firstly, these engines are incredibly reliable. So even if it's not been done properly, it's not the end of the world. I made so many mistakes when building my engine it's a miracle it runs. Starts first time on the key after 3 years of being parked up outside. So don't worry about that. Secondly, this garage sounds like a bunch of cowboys, clearly got the apprentice to work on your car as it doesn't sound right at all. See if anyone can recommend a good garage in the Staffordshire area as I wouldn't want to d -
Loud knocking sound after head repair

Wow! £1300 for such little amount of work! That's a lot of cash. Yes, charge that much for a Subaru Evo, they are very complex vehicles and are intricate, but these Starlet engines are so simple to work on it really should not have cost that much. The rattle will be more prominent at higher RPM's. There is a chance it's the cams and it's very simple thing to check. Depending on your state of tune, whip the rocker cover off and spin the cams around with an adjustable until you can see where the service bolt should go. If the wholes line up perfectly then yo -

These cars do not run a Mass Air Flow sensor, instead they rely on a Manifold Air Pressure sensor. These engines are fairly mechanical and you're unlikely to start getting lights on the dash, sounds like me like you took the car to a bunch of right cowboys, it's really not that big of a job to work on these engines. I definitely would not be driving it until you sort the rattling out. What they may not know is that, whilst these cars are twin cam, they are not a true twin cam setup, the cams under the rocker are spring loaded and the -
I adore the Recaro seats they made for these cars :D

I think there are still lots of users on the forum, when you need help or want to blog about your project, forums are the best place. Facebook is just for mass consumption of information, can't really see much technical advice being given on there. That said, I actually don't have a FaceAche account but from what I've seen of it it seems pretty tragic. Sounds like you have a nice Glanza. Looking forward to these aforementioned photos :D

Tidy, loving the carbon fibre. And those gauges in the cabin look the tits! Good car collection I see :D

Got a build to that Mini?
-
Hey looking decent man. Mini is not too shabby either!

You on about coil packs? The Starlet does not run coil packs, it runs a dizzy cap ignition system and just the single ignitor. I just had a google 1.6 corolla engine, not sure what you're on about.

How frustrating!
-
No maybe you're right. I should just throw money away on pointless stuff.

Yeah I'm not driving it anymore as I guess the oil pressure would be pretty low, wouldn't want to spin a bearing. Yeah he's a bit of a legend to be fair, saved the GT from the Scrap Yard. One day I want to do what you're doing and properly restore something. Yeah, I planned on going down the TF035H route, but seeing more and more these days people just sticking to the CT9 Hybrid. I fancy an externally gated Blitz CT9 on a Blitz Access ECU or maybe a ME11 with Coil On Plug conversion. If I can get 200 BHP I think I'll be happy. Then just get something else if I want m

Yeah, this is looking mental! Loving it! Keep us posted.

Haha thanks, yeah duh! To be fair I never picked up a spanner before working on this car and it was my first and only car. Made a lot of mistakes but learnt a lot as well. Cracking car to learn how stuff works, on the whole it's been very forgiving. I've been out enjoying it on my holiday off for the last two weeks. 4 years later I've actually be able to enjoy the car. Unfortunately I've not done something right as it's leaking oil like no tomorrow, 4 litres in 300 miles is not good! Still kept up well against a 16 plate Mini Cooper S 2.0 Turbo. The chap said he was struggling to kee

What's a full CT9 hybrid setup worth 2nd hand?
Calum122 replied to ste91's topic in Lifestyle General
My mates got a 16 plate mini cooper S and the on board computer is telling me it's putting out 160Kw with 320Nm torque. It's a heavy car mind you at double the weight of my Starlet. My Starlet is running an air filter and HKS exhaust and he said that my Starlet was pulling away. His Cooper felt quick, the power is instant and throughout, but I was surprised to hear him say my Starlet was pulling away. If my car wasn't spinning in every gear I reckon it would decimate that cooper. The tyres are ruined on my car, that said there is no way I could take corners as quick as he w -
Awesome little car! I'd love to get some track time out in a Starlet. I bet it's mega fun

It's a shame to scrap a DC2, but I don't blame you. I bet that car is an absolute dog! Sterlin work going on here. Keep it up!

That wedding looks epic. Really cool cars to see there..part of the attraction to be fair. -
Join the club, who isn't these days!

You must be so pleased with how this motor has turned out! It's looking lovely.
-
My Dad is heavily into the VW scene owning his own pile of rust Type 2 Split screen (although it is mint now) He states that these cars are so loved that they would very rarely scrap a split screen barndoor van. To even go as far as to say they would not even scrap this. If you believe that, then no, your Starlet isn't done for. It just might not be economically feasible to salvage it.

Oh cool. I don't know much about them, but I've heard they can rip round a track okay. Gotta question that French reliability on the track over the Jap motor, but that's just down to lack of understanding. I know my brother once tried racing a VTS off the lights in his Civic Type R EP3 and was worryingly surprised when he struggled to lose it. Back in day, a few of my friends had VTR's but I never gave them much thought. You sticking around on the forum? Be interesting to see where you go with it.
-
Looking grand, keep up the good work.

I do wonder about these Starlets out on the track. You often see them pitting more often than the other Jap cars.
